Iphone 3g shut down?

Why would iphone3g just turn off with a full battery or even half a battery? I got it home and plugged it in and then held home and power for 15 sec and it came back on but what would cause this problem to happen

A faulty battery could be the problem. Any Apple store can check this for you if it happens again. I would also restore the iPhone.
