Can someone tell me why there is not a link for everyone to get to the chat room?

Asked by Kelly27 (1501points) May 5th, 2009

I don’t understand why a link is not posted for everyone to have access to the chatroom. The way it is now it seems you have to jump through hoops to get into it and only certain people know how to get in.

Is it the intent that the chat room is only for certain users?

no that’s not the intent, imo
i just search fluther chat on top right hand and then i find my way
it is inconvenient sure but i don’t think that the intention is to keep everyone out
as everyone and their mother can go on there and be a jerk off
like the person who likes to impersonate me on there

Likeradar's avatar

No, that’s not the intent. I think the reason is if it’s really easy to find, trolls will have a much easier time getting in there and ruining the lurve fest.

FGS's avatar

@Likeradar So for the most part, it really is a “secret” room?

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@FGS
only if you think searching for it makes one part of ‘vip’ lol
its really not that bad

FGS's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir I’m just being pissy….

Kelly27's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir I do search for it and I always get a bunch of links that no longer work.

jrpowell's avatar

Likeradar is correct. Anybody is welcome in. It is just kinda hidden to keep a single person out.

Protip. Use the contact link at the top of any page to find a link to Man o’ War. From there it is easy to find the social chatroom.

Kelly27's avatar

@Ivan Sorry I missed that, can you try again?

Dog's avatar

Nope. Tis not a secret. Just not posted for trolls. A large variety of folks come and go within.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@Kelly27
i was just there
i did the search and tried the second link it led me to coral reef so all in all it took all of 30 seconds…basically if you want to go there you can get there

Kelly27's avatar

Isn’t there mods to kick trolls out? It seems to me that it would be easier to just kick the one annoying person out rather than make everyone else have to search to get in.

eponymoushipster's avatar

it’s not a secret. you can bookmark it once you find it. that’s what i’ve done.

Likeradar's avatar

@Kelly27 You just have to find it once. Book mark it. One annoying person can ruin a perfectly good conversation. And if the one annoying person invites friends, it just all turns to shit.

casheroo's avatar

Anyone can go in. If you were in it, personally..I wouldn’t want to be in it, I don’t it like when people copy and paste conversations that go on in the chat, onto other websites.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@casheroo wait, what happened? really?

Ivan's avatar

@Likeradar

Sure, but who is to judge who is “annoying” and who isn’t? Won’t the annoying people think that the other people are annoying, too?

jrpowell's avatar

The chatroom is run by a different company. Bendrew pay a monthly fee to use the service. A long time ago Andrew said they wanted to write their own that looked like Fluther and used the same database for users. They didn’t want to post a link until that was done. It has been over a year. I’m not holding my breath.

Kelly27's avatar

@casheroo Not sure to what you are referring but thanks for the heads up. I will make sure to come and visit you regularly in chat. :)

Ivan's avatar

I think casheroo is referring to Harmony and Shell posting conversations on wis.dm.

casheroo's avatar

@Ivan No, it was Kelly. Guess it could be a different Kelly, but I doubt it.
this is getting offtopic. I’ll only talk about it in the chatroom.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@casheroo no way to go and check now

Likeradar's avatar

@Ivan Annoying is different than trolling. I was just using kelly’s wording. There are annoying people on there all the time. Maybe I’m one of them to some people.

Kelly27's avatar

@Likeradar I have bookmarked it several times and then when you go to click on it you get this message:

Sorry, we can’t let you in right now

The owner of this Campfire chat room has either turned off guest access, changed the guest access URL, or the maximum number of people are already in the room.

If you believe this to be incorrect, please verify this with the person who invited you into the room or ask them for the new room URL.

@Casheroo Yes, please have fun talking, just do it somewhere else

Ivan's avatar

@Likeradar

Trolls are determined and resilient. There are always chat mods.

jrpowell's avatar

@Kelly27 :: You need to bookmark this link. This actual link and not where it takes you. I know this is stupid.

https://fluther.campfirenow.com/d9528

It is just campfire being stupid and not something anyone here did on purpose.

You can also bookmark this. I keep it up to date.

edit :: a actual link would be nice. D’oh.

When I first joined a few months ago, there was a little bubble posted and I was told that was fluther’s way of extending welcome to a heavy influx of new users. Sadly, a few assholes kept coming in to ruin things and I heard were going to go back to their normal homescreen of no posted link. Who can blame them? Not me.

Kelly27's avatar

@johnpowell Thanks! I will bookmark this link and take out the other ones I had bookmarked. :)
I wasn’t saying it was something someone did on purpose I just find it frustrating sometimes. I rarely go into chat and the few times I have wanted to go in there to talk to someone it was such a pain in the ass that I just said fuck it and gave up on it.

3or4monsters's avatar

The mods do kick the trolls out, but unlike the website proper, I don’t think there’s a way to perminantly ban, and they just keep coming back and being dickwads to people.

Ivan's avatar

@3or4monsters

I’m sorry, but this is the Internet. Stuff like that is just going to happen.

jrpowell's avatar

@Kelly27 :: I understand. The way it is now sucks for everyone. I just think writing a real chatroom is really low on the list of things they need to get done. It is only two guys coding and keeping the servers running.

3or4monsters's avatar

@Ivan , please. wis.dm was a candyland of tenderhearted, starry-eyed newbies compared to most websites on the internet, and this place isn’t any different, just more CIVIL. I’m no stranger to trolling, bad behavior, or in fact, BEING a troll. Your attempts at trying to ‘tough love’ me on internet behavior is pretty funny.

That said, after a while, it gets old, and it gets tiring to witness. I was sick and done with it before I ever went to here or wis.dm. I’ve moderating FPS and MMORPG forums, for god’s sake… it gets old. It’s not SHOCKING or HORRIFYING or TRUAMATIZING. Hahaha! Just boring and tiresome.

I am glad to have places where one doesn’t have to worry about trolls and just have a conversation from time to time.

Kelly27's avatar

@johnpowell I get your point, I was just frustrated at trying to get in again and had to ask why it was so damn difficult. Thanks for the help

jrpowell's avatar

@3or4monsters :: That is right. We can not ban users. We can kick them out and they can come right back in. That is why we occasionally lock the room. They usually go away after 20 minutes.

3or4monsters's avatar

Hit refresh, because I just edited my comment to include more scorn.

Kelly27's avatar

@3or4monsters What does this have to do with wis.dm? and why so hostile? Geez

Ivan's avatar

@3or4monsters

I think one of the major complaints about wis.dm near the end was that it didn’t kick out the “trolls.” I guess I didn’t notice. I never saw any behavior that I thought warranted a ban. I understand the desire to have a place where you don’t have to worry about them, but if you get all agitated by them so much that it starts impacting how much time you spend on the site, they’ve essentially won.

3or4monsters's avatar

@Ivan easy for you to say. They didn’t stalk or harass you when all you wanted was to be left alone. I left wis.dm long before it died… it didn’t stop them from coming into the chat room here DAILY to spew vitriol directly at me (line, after line, after line) and other wis.dm users who were trying to integrate here for weeks.

Again, though, it’s nothing new, it’s nothing shocking, it’s just fucking annoying.

@Kelly27 the trolls coming into chat and causing a problem, the reason they made the chat room less accessible recently, was because of trolls from wis.dm. Hard to think they came from just anywhere, since they’d spew things that only wis.dm’ers would know.

I sincerely regret bringing it up. I was delighted when wis.dm finally died and I should not have brought a stick to this dead horse.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@ivan there was plenty of unhealthy interaction on wis.dm that needed moderation

eponymoushipster's avatar

ohgeez, are we back to this wis.dm v. fluther stuff AGAIN?

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@eponymoushipster you’re right, sorry, i’m off this q

Ivan's avatar

@eponymoushipster No… where did that come from?

3or4monsters's avatar

You don’t want to come into the chat room anyways, we’re all huddled in horrified silence over monster clitorises. :/

Likeradar's avatar

@3or4monsters lol… I will have nightmares.

Ivan's avatar

@3or4monsters I’m sorry I missed that :S

jrpowell's avatar

I walked in on the middle or the giant clit talk. I was really confused for a long time.

[mod says:] Please remember that the Fluther social chat is more of a “nice thing” and less of an official Fluther feature. Thanks! <3
