Has anyone been involved in Peace Corps or AmeriCorps?

What are the pros and cons of either, in your opinion? I am looking to apply for one or the other of the programs next year. If you have any stories of past experiences with either of these programs, please share. Also, if you think there are some lesser known alternatives out there that are also good, please let me know.
