Is it possible to force reboot the iPhone?

Asked by bomyne (639points) May 13th, 2009

My iPhone has some issues. Occasionally it’ll freeze/hang up in traditional windows style. Unlike a computer however, I can not figure out how to forcibly reboot this thing. So far the only things I have been able to do is either let it run out of battery power or hope that it crashes. Both of which take time.

Press down and hold the home button. Keep it held down. Now press and hold the top button. Now both buttons are pressed.

It should give you a slider to power it off. That is like a reboot.

If you keep holding the buttons for 10 seconds, it’ll force restart and you’ll immediately see the Apple logo.

If it’s just the current application that’s frozen, hold down the home button until you’re taken back to the home screen.

Hold the home button and the power button for 10 seconds.

Thanks guys. iPhone just froze again and your solutions worked perfectly!

To be honest, I thought it was pretty stupid of Apple not to include a reset button but now I see I was wrong :D

DO NOT keep holding down the buttons after the apple logo appears!! If you do, you may accidentally set it into recovery mode, meaning that all the data will have to be wiped… Ironically.

@Fred931 That’s not true. To activate recovery mode, you turn off the phone, hold down the home button, and plug it into your computer.

Continue holding down the home button until the iTunes icon appears. Then you may release it, and iTunes will ask you if you would like to restore your phone to factory settings. To abandon the restore and cancel recovery, simply choose “no” from the prompt and disconnect your phone.

Not only is entering recovery mode a totally different process, but you can enter and exit it without causing any problems. “Recovery mode” would be a weird synonym for “wipe everything mode”.

Well, that happened to me once… Weird
