This site is about being part of a friendly and distinguished commmunity full of comedy, intellect, spontaneity, and the unexpected. Ask and answer questions, offer opinions, get involved, and have a lot of fun.

Pro’s – just about everything

Con’s – I’ll have to go look for some but I’m sure I won’t find any

By the way, welcome to Fluther! =)

A wide variety of interesting, sincere questions (and some trash) with well-informed, thoughtful responses (and some junk) by interesting people (and some losers) including experts on occasion. Actually quite a diverse group that keeps it interesting and fun. Welcome to fluther…make yourself at home. ..you’ll have fun and learn new things!

Essentially it’s a community based on asking and answering questions. Within the boundaries of that setup, it has the versatility you’ll find in any online community without a set topic.

And I abuse it as a debating site. :D

Some of my personal pros and cons:
Pro: – It’s an interesting community with a broad spectrum of covered topics.
Con: – It has moderators. Although to their credit, I haven’t seen them interfere much. No personal criticism, but I’ve come to dislike the concept of moderation in communities. Unconstrained freedom of speech is a luxury one easily gets used to and is reluctant to rein in again. As Lao Tzu said, the greatest leaders are the ones whom nobody notices.
– It’s very efficient at keeping you from your work.

@Fyrius We’ve had the free speech discussion here before many times. The mods aren’t here to stifle your speech, they’re here to keep things sane and kill off the trolls. Unconstrained free speech often leads to a 4chan-like result in my experiences.

@Dmama, Regarding this site and its purpose, it’s whatever you make of it. It’s great to be able to tap many opinions at once… then again depending on what you ask, the answers you get may not be what you want to hear (but likely very true). I won’t provide any pros and cons, I’ll let you make those as you discover them on your own, as they will depend on your outlook regarding digital communication, your experiences with other websites, etc.

Fluther can be a very good site to learn about a specific topic or to share views with people that have the same life experiences that you have. It also can be a source of entertainment when you have spare time.

The nicest thing I like about Fluther is that it is a welcoming community where you may form friendships. That is what keeps me coming back.

Pro – You will find some great answers to your questions.

Con – A lot dicks will gang up on you if your opinion is voiced and they don’t like what you write.

This site is about learning about others

@dynamicduo: Hahaha, yes, you’re right.
You’re probably aware that I have no trouble with 4chan-like or, I should correct, /b/-like results. Buuut I guess you have a point if you advocate keeping the 4channery on 4chan and the Flutheration on Fluther. I’ll try to do as the Romans do when in Rome.

I do hope the mods are willing to be open-minded in their definition of “sane”. I guess I’ll find out about that when it becomes relevant.

This site is about different things for different people. For some it’s about information. Others, discussion. Still others, social networking.

I think people take pride in providing answers that others find valuable. Lurve is the feedback mechanism that shows how valuable others think you comment or question is. Lurve gets increasingly harder to get, the more of it you have.

We have our share of jokesters and trolls. The trolls usually get disciplined quickly by the moderators. Jokesters are seen as secondary in importance. Serious answers are the primary thing here.

It is difficult to be playful here. No collective story telling (or not much), and not a lot of absurdity. I have yet to figure out how to introduce more playfulness, but I remain hopeful. Welcome, and have fun!

Pros: I tell my friends it’s a question and answer community. It’s like having a conversation about any number of topics at any given time. I’ve learned a lot here, made some friends, and have been challenged on more than one occasion. We lift each other up, hold each other accountable, and basically spread a lot of lurve. Basically, it’s awesome and you’ll get to know some really cool jellies.

Cons: ...

Welcome to Fluther!

Pros: instant responses, good community, iPhone app

Cons: Be careful of anyone watching over your shoulder in that there are some questions you wished no one would have asked in public.
