Is any SOFTWARE available that could test out a graphics card and determine whether or not there are problems?

Using Vista, 64 bit.

Many times if you’re playing a game in the screen freezes and the program quits, it is due to heat issues. If there isn’t good ventilation in your case, the video card could overheat.
