Yosemite has a day hike which I routinely describe as one of the most moving sites I've ever seen in nature. I don't remember its exact name, but it's the short hike that features the sequoias... The hike itself is pretty tame, but the vistas literally changed my life. I could tell you exactly why, but I'd just recommend seeing it for yourself.

In the valley, the four mile trail to glacier point, and then the panorama trail is a great, serious day hike. you basically hike up from the valley to the rim, and then hike along the rim and down. i don't know about this time of year though, the four mile trail might be closed.

The Mist Trail to the top of Vernal Falls is my favorite day hike. You can go on to the top of Nevada Falls if you're feeling particularly strapping that day.
