Food Question. I found Celery Bugs?

Asked by RedPowerLady (12598points) June 8th, 2009

When I got out my celery today to make dinner there was a large, centipede looking, bug in the middle of the celery. Needless to say this disgusted me so I threw the entire thing away. Is this typical?? It has never occurred before. There are no other bugs in our house so I am sure it is located to just the celery. And I’m sure it was a centipede type bug and not a typical house bug like moth or ant. Any clues? (really I am hoping this is somewhat normal? so I won’t be as disgusted)

A centipede? Gross!
I’ve made a salad before that had at least one caterpillar. Yes my local grocer is that fresh.

Was it dead or alive?

I’m not even joking. I am reading your question chewing on a bite of celery and peanut butter. talk about serious bad timing.

@cak Quick, check it for bugs.

@chyna – I’m so close to gagging right now!

I’m sure it happens. I mean, it grows in the ground… but EW!!! Horrible! And @cak I can’t even imagine your terror right now. I almost passed out reading the description. I don’t do centipedes. Oh, the dreams I’m going to have now…

chef Hubby says it came from the celery, not your house. And apparently it’s normal and to just wash it.

If it were me, I’d start screaming hysterically and not open mny fridge until someone could get rid of the bug.

@cak So sorry. I’d probably gag if I was you.
@chyna Dead but it didn’t look like it’d been that way for long.
@The_Compassionate_Heretic I typically buy from farmer’s market or organic (when I can afford it) so it is usually fresh. But in this case it was just typical celery. I think I might have to switch to fresh celery from now on…
@casheroo I probably would have done just that if hubby hadn’t been standing there. Please tell your husband thank you for me for that information. Should we always check celery for centipedes??? If so then hubby will have to have celery duty from now on…....

I’d have tossed the bug but not the celery. Probably most of what we eat has been walked on by a bug at some time or other.

@RedPowerLady – No problem. You do realize if I find a bug in anything, you’ll be the first to know, right?

My daughter is laughing hysterically at me, she thinks this has got to be the best moment, ever!

@RedPowerLady He says as long as you wash it, it’s fine. Bugs being on vegetables is bound to happen. But much less often on store bought prewashed vegetables.

One good thing about finding a bug is this: the food is not caked with wax and soaked with chemical washes.

chyna's avatar

@hungryhungryhortence Yes, I’m finding immense consolation in that.

RedPowerLady's avatar

@hungryhungryhortence Ahhh there is some good words that might help me relax from this disgusting experience.

@casheroo Thanx again for the good information. I’ve seen bugs on veggies just never a centipede and never in celery and rarely in store bought.

@cak You do realize if I find a bug in anything, you’ll be the first to know, right?
ROFL. You totally cracked me up.

@Jeruba Ah yes, very true. It was just too new an experience with me not knowing how “normal” a celery centipede was. I guess I let myself get freaked out a bit too quickly. As it landed in the trash hubby was saying not to throw it away. Too late.

At least you did not find half a bug while eating your celery. That would be real gross.
