What's the best way to go about buying a new TV and furniture?

My friend and I are moving in for the first time (out of our parents place) and we want to buy a 42” lcd w/1080p and 120hz and a sectional for our couch. We’ve shopped around a few places but really don’t want to get ripped off. Any ideas? Thanks.
