Would we be better off not having caffeine?

Asked by bubbleblue (52points) June 15th, 2009

It’s a chemical stimulant not natural to the body. I believe there’s more negative consequences than positive benefits drinking caffeine.

I NEED my caffeine in the morning because otherwise, I turn into a miserable b*tch. :)

DarkScribe's avatar

Coffee is an antioxidant. I am addicted to antioxidants. Short black antioxidants.

Also tea, green & black, are accepted health aids.

eponymoushipster's avatar

if you saw me in the morning, you’d know the answer to this question is FALSE.

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

It’s a vice.
Caffeine does nothing for you nutritionally.

Would the world be better off?

In the short term, it would be a disaster.
Riots, overturned vehicles, arson and mass hysteria would be rampant.

In the long run after we all mellowed out, we’d be healthier than ever.

Bite your tongue. Sacrilege.

Depends—I have caffeine in my migraine medication and honestly my life is better off with it. Ultimately I think caffeine is like most other things in life—it has its uses but can be abused/overused.

Oh, and might I add – BLASPHEMY!

knitfroggy's avatar

I wouldn’t be better off without it, I’d be gripey and have a headache. And I probably personally account for 1/2 of the Diet Pepsi sales in the mid west.

WOULD WE BE BETTER OFF SCRAPING OUR FACES AWAY WITH A RUSTY SPOON?!?

I must recuse myself from answering or I am afraid I will have to kill you for dreaming up the very idea . . .

btko's avatar

I think the world would be a much better place without all of these coffee addicted fiends roaming the earth. Zombies would be worse though.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

@btko Uh, care to expand on that zombie bit?

Blondesjon's avatar

@btko . . .I really can’t wade into a hungry group of zeds without my trusty old aluminum baseball bat, and a coupla cups in me.

tinyfaery's avatar

Upon actually reading the Q…caffeine is not a chemical stimulant. Doesn’t it occur naturally in coffee, tea & cocoa beans?

btko's avatar

@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities,

Well, coffee addicts at least can still do their jobs and generally participate successfully in society. Zombies, however, would not; plus they eat brains.

bubbleblue's avatar

After the withdrawal syptoms, everything will be fine.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@bubbleblue if you feel it’s not beneficial for you, don’t drink it.

bubbleblue's avatar

Caffeine was invented by a German scientist.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@bubbleblue lol. where’d you come up with that one?

chyna's avatar

@knitfroggy I must account for the other 1/2 of diet pepsi sales in the country. Can’t leave the house without one and can’t go to bed if there isn’t at least a full one in the house.
Do without caffeine? I think not.

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

@bubbleblue Inventing and discovering are not the same things, ~ but nice try.

tinyfaery's avatar

Umm…it occurs naturally. Read past the first sentence.

knitfroggy's avatar

@chyna I’m with you! Pepsi owes us something…

chyna's avatar

@knitfroggy Some stock certificates perhaps?

DarkScribe's avatar

@eponymoushipster are you a mormon?

For a second there I thought you said “moron”.

knitfroggy's avatar

@chyna Sounds good to me…wonder how we go about collecting those! I was thinking a few coupons, but you are a bigger thinker than me!

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

@DarkScribe Ha! I thought the same til I saw your comment.

I personally don’t drink soda at all and only decafinated tea and coffee. Frankly, the stuff makes me jittery – which I really don’t enjoy.

Mind you I drink about two coffees a day – just decaf. I love the flavor and smell. But I am just fine without the caffeine.

to wake up, I guzzle two bottles of water as soon as I get up – works great.

“It’s a chemical stimulant not natural to the body. I believe there’s more negative consequences than positive benefits drinking caffeine.”

You aren’t really keen on accuracy are you bubbleboy. Nobody drinks caffeine, but lots of people drink or eat things that contain caffeine. It is not a chemical stimulant, it is a natural component of several very enjoyable and healthy foods and drinks. If used excessively it can be negative, but then drinking too much water can kill you too.

You have more chance of turning lead into gold than talking people into avoiding things that contain caffeine, more so now that it is being recommended as a cancer prevention. People like it and if they really wanted to get healthier there are a huge number of things that would give better health benefits if avoided. Sodas, junk food, drugs, tobacco.

@cprevite

Sorry to say but you’d be way better off drinking the regular coffee and tea. Here is an excerpt from wikipedia on decaffeination:

..coffee beans are first steamed for 30 minutes and then repeatedly rinsed with either methylene chloride (Dichloromethane/DCM) or ethyl acetate for about 10 hours. The solvent is then drained away and the beans steamed for an additional 10 hours to remove any residual solvent. Sometimes coffees which are decaffeinated using ethyl acetate are referred to as naturally processed because ethyl acetate can be derived from various fruits or vegetables, but because of the impracticality of gathering natural ethyl acetate, the chemical used for decaffeination is synthetic.

That makes me want to only drink double cafe blacks now.

Amazing how those who want to avoid what they regard as health risks get taken.

I’m trying to convince myself not to drink soda.

eponymoushipster's avatar

@bubbleblue i’m trying to convince myself you’re not mentally challenged. i think you’re gonna win.

The Mormons lost I take it?

cookieman's avatar

@btko: Well that sucks. Perhaps I’ll just stick to water.

@DarkScribe: I could care less about the health benefits. As I said, caffeine makes me jittery (which I dislike). Hardly “taken”.

I wasn’t referring to you, don’t take things personally. I was referring to all of those trusting people who believe that they are making a healthier choice. People like a couple of my daughters who, like you, don’t drink caffeine containing beverages.

casheroo's avatar

I’m trying to get rid of my excessive caffeine habit, but I have to. I’m sad. :(

rooeytoo's avatar

I don’t do well on caffeine either. But I love Coke. So maybe once a week or so I allow myself a cold can, it is absolute bliss. Doesn’t matter what time of day I drink it though, it seems as if I don’t sleep well that night. Could be in my head, but I don’t think so.

MacBean's avatar

Caffeine has really beastly effects on me. I avoid it almost always. Every once in a while I have a bit as a treat because caffeine-free things just don’t taste as good. But then I’m awake for days and it’s horrible and I keep away for months again.

tinyfaery's avatar

I can drink a Coke and go to sleep. I feel lucky.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

Life without caffeine? Ain’t no way I could survive without caffeine. The cops would have to shoot me like a dog because I’d be killing everyone at Starbucks, biting off their fingers and sucking the caffeinated blood out of them.

Coffee has shown some evidence at preventing or delaying dementia. Caffeine, like anything else, is not harmful in moderation. If you want to die a horrible death, just try taking non-decaffeinated coffee away from those of us who love it. we’ll eat you alive.

arturodiaz's avatar

has anybody allucinated from a caffeine overconsumption?

augustlan's avatar

I used to drink nothing but Coke, all day every day. About 16 years ago, I quit the caffeine when I went on a diet. I didn’t suffer withdrawal or anything (maybe a mild headache)... I was very surprised. I haven’t consumed it regularly since then. Maybe I should… it might perk me up.

I don’t drink decaffeinated stuff though, I drink things that don’t contain it in the first place. I don’t think caffeine free Coke is any good. Blech.

Facade's avatar

I’m glad I’m not hooked on caffeine. You people are scary

Tink's avatar

Nope I need caffeine every morning at the same time everyday

Caffeine makes my mind go ‘round, in good ways.
