What is the chat room for? How do you use it?

Asked by Tink (8673points) June 23rd, 2009 from iPhone

I was just there and I didn’t see anyone there.
Did I miss something?
What do you talk about there?

Yeah. That’s how it usually is.

It’s supposed to be for more off topic chats, but nobody really uses it. Occasionally people would for a “Jelly-Table”, but those seem to have died too.

“Jelly-Table”?

willbrawn's avatar

Can you access it on an iPhone?

DeanV's avatar

This explains the Jelly-Tables well.

Tink's avatar

@willbrawn – Yes you can

It’s hit and miss as to whether there’s anyone in there – it seems to get busier at night.

Tink's avatar

So does it have topics? Or you just talk?

DeanV's avatar

You just talk. More chat roomish format. Less forumish format.

You just talk. Just like we’re talking now.

I hung out in the chatroom for two or three days back when I stopped coming to the rest of Fluther. When I was there, we were talking about events occurring on the site.

As with the rest of the site’s popularity, it seems to be busiest during North America’s evenings.

If it wasn’t clear in my message above, I stopped going to the chat room after those few days. I don’t really consider it a part of the website, to me it’s more of a back room, where you go when you need a spare light bulb.

I understood I was just thinking

If I was consistently on Fluther for longer periods of time, I would go in there. But I usually drop in and out of the site, so I really wouldn’t spend much time in there anyway. And I hate it when people just lurk in chat rooms. It’s a little weird.

Tink's avatar

So people just go to see what others are talking about?

Ivan's avatar

Have you never used a chat room before?

syz's avatar

It’s sometimes used for, um, more inappropriate conversations than what you’ll see posted on the main site. ;)

Chat room etiquette is different that other formats – it takes a little while to get the hang of following multiple conversations at once (or being able to pick out the one convo that you’re participating in).

Well, imagine you’re just talking on AIM with a bunch of people at once.

DeanV's avatar

Yes. It is a bit less kid friendly.

Tink's avatar

@syz – Good to know : )

Tink's avatar

@Ivan – Ahhh I know that much about chat rooms

By the way, there are two different chat rooms. The Man O’ War is for talking with administrators, and the Corral Reef is for leisure chat. There’s generally not many people in the Man O’ War.

Tink's avatar

Yeah the Coral Reef was the one I was reffering to
