Do apps and programs on an external hard drive automatically update when connected to the net?

Asked by tadpole (709points) July 8th, 2009

i put a few things on my portable hard drive for convenience…eg firefox, spotify, fotopedia, tweetdeck….when i reconnect to the web/net with this drive do these apps update of their own accord or do i need to do it manually…and can i assume that it is legal to put such things on an external HD? thanks…

Generally speaking, a had drive, be it internal or external should still update. If you have doubts, run your updates manually.

Running programs from a external usb connection will be slower so keep an eye out for that.

Most of those apps will query their servers when you launch them. They should update themselves wherever they are launched from. If system components need to be updated, they will be updated where they are located on the boot volume.

It is legal to install them on an external, unless the app’s EULA specifies otherwise. There are some apps that must be installed on the boot volume or they won’t run.

some do. but you can always block them in your firewall.
