23 or Picasa Web Albums?

Asked by aiwendil (561points) July 14th, 2009

I’m really tired of all the limitations of flickr’s free accounts. The 200 photo max is getting to me, and I’m not really willing to pay the extra money for a pro account since I’m not a serious photographer. I just want a place to organize my digital photos online.

I think I’m going to go with 23 or Picasa. I’m aware that you can only upload 30 photos a month with 23, but that should be more than enough for me. So, besides that, which one do you prefer? Pros and cons?

I vote for Picasa, not only because of the web album feature, but because the desktop client is great. It’s a free, easy to use photo editor/organizer, with a nice photo viewer. I use it as my default photo viewer because of how good it looks.

@aiwendil – Welcome to Fluther. I would vote for Picassa to. It is one amazing program! Its photo editing and management capabilities are amazing!

Huge Picassa fan here, as well.

Picasa seems to be winning out. Any 23 users hiding in the bushes?

Yep, I lurve 23, I think it’s in my top three of favourite sites. Well, top five definitely. What I like most is their open attitude, and especially their attitude of “we’re not going to screw you in the ass like Flickr did by telling you you can’t have more than 200 photos once you get there”. I got a T-shirt and stickers from them recently ;-)

Also, they don’t mind supporting third party applications – heck, they even modified jUploader themselves to support 23. Really, 23 is the best – and I bet most people the recommend Picasa have never tried it ;-)

Actually I have a question. I use Picassa as a means to an end. Is there actually an online hosting site? Maybe the best is both worlds!

Yeah! Just click the “upload to web” button in the top right corner.

But, thanks for your help, everyone! I ended up going with 23. I wasn’t really looking for photo editing capabilities (I use picnic for that. :)) I’m really liking it so far. It’s got a nice clean design. It’s a little slow at times, but it’s still great. I also accidentally deleted all 200 photos I had uploaded the first day I made my account, so Maria from 23 gave me a code for a Plus account for 1 month even though I would have been willing to have my account deleted to start fresh. I was very pleased at the option they gave me instead though. :D

Ah, forgot to mention that: their support rocks ^.^

@aiwendil – thank you for bringing up 23. I had never heard of it.

@Vincentt You’re welcome. I only just discovered it myself when I looked up flickr alternatives.
