Is this site too heavily moderated?

No, and this question has been asked so many times, I’m surprised you didn’t find it in the search box.

I have said before and will say again that I have been moderated more than most and have never once had a bitch about it.

This is a privately owned site and their house=their rules.

We like to be respectful on this site. It works.

No, this site is not too heavily moderated. Why should an ad hominem attacks be allowed? They add absolutely nothing to any discussion and can very easily lead a thread way, way, way off topic. I personally find intelligent discussion of compelling questions much more interesting than insults. If I want insults I’ll go see Don Rickles. It is each person’s choice whether to play nice, just as it is the site owner’s choice to disallow such behavior.

Ive been here like 5 minutes and yes.

Personally, I’ve been in an environment where the moderation was half-assed. I’m not there anymore. I am here. That should tell you something. Especially since I’m 100% in favor of free speech. The mods here are very, very wise, they won’t remove it if it’s not causing a problem, and most times, comments are removed, not whole threads for what it’s worth. I’ll tell you what would happen if they let the personal attacks fly.

This site would start crawling with assholes who would have far less interest in engaging in a debate than in shouting you down by calling you whatever names they had to in order to get you to disengage, so they could feel like they “won” the argument (something they are incapable of doing by using wit and logic). All your sharp, respectful people who want to be here because they can actually engage in thought provoking discussion would leave the site in disgust and you’d basically have another Q&A site just like the umpteen other shitty Q&A sites on the internet.

Bottom line, no matter HOW pissed I’ve been when something of mine was first removed, I was able to resolve the issue or understand why it happened, the mods are great, and they do what they do to give you the best damn Q&A site on the internet.

…oh yes, and downvotes is contrary to the whole vibe about this site…you aren’t graded for good and bad…instead, lurve is given freely and voluntarily…if you don’t like it, you don’t give lurve.

The moderators are slowly but surely forcing us to a completely homogeneous state of mind so that they can synchronize our brainwaves and control us remotely from their base in the CIA headquarters. Sorry Disco. I’m a convert. I’m actually finding witty replies which insult through knowledge rather than personal attacks better.
Fluther is very heavily moderated, but I think that this engenders an atmosphere where people know that if they don’t post good and thoughtful comments they’ll probably be moderated. It’s give and take. But in my case, as the pacifist I am, I’m actually quite happy with the way things are.

Plus, I don’t like downvoting. Youtube is a marvelous case in point of downvoting gone wrong. It’s stupid how the system has been hijacked. And since this is the internet, it will be hijacked if we have it.

It’s fair unless it’s against me. That’s taking it too far.

@Ivan; The nice thing is that in a lurve-fest like this, none of it actually counts towards our scores because we are all old friends or at least acquaintances who have long since maxed out on one another. So we can joke around and show that we appreciate each other’s jokes, without getting “cheap” lurve or whatever you want to call it.

Then what are you worried about? I recognize that it takes some of the satisfaction out of getting a GA for a serious answer when it is so easy to get them for jokes or cheap quips (I once got 18 GAs for the word “clique”), but you just can’t take it too seriously and you have to treat different situations with different standards.

Lurve is used as a tool to simply say “YEAH!!” in a really condescending and childish way whenever someone says something you agree with. In a thread like this, lurve is rarely actually given out for a “great answer”.

I’ve had several questions moderated, a couple of them disappeared completely, never to be seen again, and you don’t see me fucking whining about it. I was at another site with NO mods, and it sucked big rotten dead whale balls. I would never go back to that site, even if Fluther disappeared tomorrow. Please Bendrew, don’t take our fluther away!

Anyone who whines about the mods, or the lurve, or the unfairness they feel that they are receiving at the hands of the moderators are quite welcome to leave, and don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.
