Why are Responses with Emoji deleted?

Asked by Fred931 (9434points) July 16th, 2009 from iPhone

Just wanted to know exactly the reason why, since everyone can see them.

In case you don’t know what Emoji is, it’s a bunch of emotes that come in a $2 app for iPhone & iPod touch, like 

Lol, you seriously did
As I said before, maybe cause others might not see them (or emoji just failed at that) or they are innapropriate

This format isn’t set up to reproduce them correctly. All I get is square, square, square.

Fred931's avatar

Ah. Wait, then why can I see them?

YARNLADY's avatar

@Fred931 It may depend on which operating system that is being used, and what languages the computer is set up to display. I’m using Explorer, and my laptop is set up for very minimal display.

I get those squares, and @eponymoushipster told me they were robot testes. Did he lie to me?

Fred931's avatar

@Evelyn, probably not because then he wouldve had to see the same thing you did.

arnbev959's avatar

Not everyone can see them. I see this.

Fred931's avatar

Tell me if you see the same thing when I type this;なしはだ化かす々

Fred931's avatar

That was Japanese keyboard for the iPhone. If you see the same box things, Pete, it would make sense, since emoji icons are downloaded into the phone as a Japanese keyboard.

In the screenshot from @petethepothead I see three pictures of some kinds of symbols that are too small to see what they are, and the typed line from @Fred931 comse in as なしはだ化かす々

Fred931's avatar

@YARNLADY Each of those squares have 4 numbers in each corner, such as;

____
4 7

3 5

arnbev959's avatar

Eggh, sorry the first picture was so small. This is what it looks like for me.

So what is the official word? Yes or no?

[Wannabe Mod says]

The answer is NO!!

Jeruba's avatar

Wait, how is “yes or no” a response to a “why” question?

I see the same weird squares that @petethepothead showed. I’m on a desktop Dell with Windows XP, and nothing about it is minimal.

Tink's avatar

I think he’s saying if he can keep doing that or something

[Mod Says]: @Fred931: The mods have discussed this, and the consensus is that, for the most part, the Emoji characters clutter the site, and, since many of users are unable to see the them, they can be irritating for those uses. So we ask that in the future you refrain from using them.

By the way, thanks for bringing this issue up, as earlier there was no definitive answer.

i see the first thing @petethepothead posted a picture of – with the squares and the little numbers. but when @YARNLADY typed things, i see…chinese symbols? something like that.

i feel like i’m taking some sort of revised inkblot test!

Do the emoji serve any purpose?

AtSeDaEsEpPoAoSnA's avatar

I see dead squares…

Jeruba's avatar

In any case, I don’t think we need emoticons of any kind. This very question recently drew some strong responses.

@tiffyandthewall, those are Hiragana characters—characters from the Japanese syllabary.
