Acetone is pretty harsh, back in the nineties I destroyed many of my favorite CDs by picking them up after doing my nails. I still have a tv remote with my fingerprints burned into it thanks to Acetone nail polish remover.

It destroys your nails, I won’t touch the stuff anymore.

I don’t like nail polish remover with acetone because it hurts my fingers. About 3 hours after I use it (and a week later) it makes my finger tips almost sore. It’s like… if I put pressure on any of my nails it makes the skin/area/finger underneath the nails hurt.

Acetone is a nasty substance. It can be abused (“Inhalation of concentrations higher than 2000 ppm can cause dizziness, a feeling of drunkenness, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting. ”), it can irritate or even damage your eyes, and possibly cause lung injuries. Acetone is also very flammable and it can make the effects of other chemicals more damaging.

However, one of the biggest problems is that we don’t know if acetone causes other health problems. There seem to be some indications that acetone might cause increased rates of miscarriage and that it might damage kidneys or liver. We don’t think it causes cancer in humans but we aren’t sure. We don’t think it causes long-term neurological problems in humans but we don’t know for sure.

Until we do know all the risks, it would be better to avoid using acetone whenever possible.
