Asked by El_Cadejo (34610points) July 19th, 2009

Ive noticed on a couple different highways have signs that say “Z1000”. They dont seem to have any noticeable significance and appear randomly . Heres the best picture i could find online.

i tried looking it up on google but i keep getting results about kawasakis >_<

I have looked at the picture 4 times now and feel obsessed with it. I have no idea what it means, but want to know also.

Me too- GQ.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

maybe it represents a change in the road in 1000 miles (I’m just guessing)

augustlan's avatar

I’m stumped. Looking forward to the answer!

applesaucemanny's avatar

all I’ve found out so far is that an ld-z1000 is an asphalt road surface crack sealer but that’s the only thing that makes sense to me

Sarcasm's avatar

Which state? (Your profile shows you’ve lived in NJ, but I don’t want to be an assumer here)
On which highways do you see this?
And is it always 1000, is it sometimes 1002, 1010, 999, etc?

El_Cadejo's avatar

@Sarcasm Ive seen them in jersey, pa and just today in ny. And yes, its always 1000 which is why it confuses me. Its not like a mile marker or anything, just always z1000.

Dog's avatar

I have also found a Z 1000 compound that is an ice deterrent however it seems unlikely they would post signs on this.

Now this is going to drive me crazy.

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

We don’t have those where I live.

La_chica_gomela's avatar

@uberbatman: If you do an advanced google search, you can use the category: “But don’t show pages that have any of these unwanted words:” and lose the kawasakis. Hope that helps I have no idea what Z 1000 means either!

Dog's avatar

@La_chica_gomela you can also remove search words by using – . For instance -Kawasaki

So far the DOT site has yielded no results aside of stating that “Green signs are informational highway signs in regard to routes, streets, towns, cities, etc.” This information is really useless though.

Alien landing strips.

jrpowell's avatar

I submitted it to Reddit. Maybe someone there will know. Link.

I’m really curious. This is bothering me.

YARNLADY's avatar

I did find this: “To facilitate the dissemination of a time-critical information in a vehicular ad hoc network (VANET), immediate network connectivity is needed. In other words, a time-critical message from a source should be able to propagate and reach all of the vehicles on the road segment without any delay due to the unavailability of the vehicles to forward the message. Clearly, this requires the road segment to have a certain number of vehicles equipped with communication devices. It is the task of a system designer to determine the minimum number of vehicles (i.e., the minimum penetration) necessary to form a connected network as well as the critical transmission range required to provide such connectivity.”

Dog's avatar

@johnpowell Welcome Back

This is really bugging me too. I even called a friend in Pennsylvania and he had no idea.

Seems stupid to have an information sign on a highway if nobody has a clue as to what it means.

jrpowell's avatar

@Dog :: Thanks. Good to be back. Just back a lot less.

I have spent the last hour googleing and am coming up with nothing. I thought I was onto something with wildlife and roadkill. But that didn’t work out.

Dog's avatar

@johnpowell It is a good thing to have less. No fluther hangover and time in the sun. win – win.

Still not giving up on this question. I keep popping back in to see if it is answered.

Darwin's avatar

I am curious, too.

jrpowell's avatar

I found this reference to 1000 in the CDL manual for New Jersey.

“A water capacity greater than 454 kg (1000 pounds) as a receptacle for a gas as deļ¬ned in Sec. 173.115.”

I’m not sure if that means anything.

edit :: I found the same thing in the New York manual. But not the one in PA.

Darwin's avatar

For some reason I seem to recall vaguely that it has something to do with snow-plowing, but it could all be a fig newton of my imagination.

jrpowell's avatar

It is in the Oregon one too. But I have never seen one of those signs here.

And we have some trippy artwork on the cover of the Oregon one. (warning PDF)

And this is driving me crazy.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

I was researching these signs when the following message appeared in the middle of my computer screen.

“Please ignore the signs you have seen mentioned in the Fluther discussion. We know who you are and we know where to find you. We know you have questions, but these signs are none of your concern. Please resume your life of being occupied with more mundane things like celebrities, sports teams and the price of beer. If you persist, you will not like the results. That is all.”

I wonder what it means?

Warnings of the impending Zombie Apocalypse?

loser's avatar

Yes, that’s it! And they will all be riding Kawasakis!!!

I found this “LD-Z1000 asphalt road surface crack sealer asphalt sealer, road repairing equipment, highway maintaining,” in a trade journal ad. Or this in an ad for drainage systems: “Z1000
When it comes to drainage of pedestrian areas, parks and car parks, MEADRAIN Supreme Z1000 system is the ideal
solution in terms of functionality and visual appeal. For loading classes A15 to C250, the edge rails are embedded in
the channel body made of environmental compatible, high strength polymer concrete, which protects groundwater
from aggressive liquids.
Regarding functionality, safety and design MEADRAIN Supreme is simply unsurpassable. The Z1000 system with
galvanised steel edge protection you are assured of advanced functionality and attractive looks in a single solution.
The outstanding hydraulic properties of the proven U-shaped cross section of our channel bodies are one example of
this. The edge rails which are embedded in the channel element not only look superior but also offer reliable and
sturdy edge protection, are a further case in point. When combined with MEADRAIN Top gratings in galvanised steel,
stainless steel or ductile iron, the system has eye catching appeal but also satisfies the most stringent requirements
concerning longevity and dependability in surface drainage.”

I just spent 2+ hours going through highway/traffic sign manuals and could find nothing resembling the sign. I suspect it is just a marker to identify where the LD-Z1000 asphalt road surface crack sealer described by @YARNLADY , above, has been applied so the highway department or manufacturer can return to evaluate product effectiveness and longevity. With the accuracy of GPS equipment, why put up a confusing sign? Maybe the manufacturer plans on using photos in future advertising and installed the signs with or without permission (as in: paid someone off in the highway department to look the other way). See ya….wtf

shilolo's avatar

Perhaps an email to the PA DOT is in order? Get to the bottom of this mystery.

Dog's avatar

Has anyone tried Shilolo’s suggestion?

La_chica_gomela's avatar

@YARNLADY: Yeah, that’s what @applesaucemanny said too.

El_Cadejo's avatar

I sent an email to NJ DOT, ill let you guys know if/when they get back to me.

YARNLADY's avatar

@La_chica_gomela Oh, I forgot. I spent so much time hunting, I forgot the other responses. It’s kind of fun searching through the thousands of entries on a google search.

Dog's avatar

@uberbatman- I am eager to hear any response.

blueice342's avatar

i know they are on the nj turnpike at exits on the other side of new york like near Newark at exits

El_Cadejo's avatar

Alright, its been a couple days and they still havent gotten back to me. Tomorrow i have to go to the DMV for inspection so i plan on asking when i go. I for some reason doubt they will know, but its worth a shot.

El_Cadejo's avatar

Huzaaaaa found the answer.
“There is a break in the barrier between the car and truck lanes in 1000 feet.

( 1000: There is a break in the barrier between the north and southbound lanes in 1000 feet.)”

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@uberbatman woot
now i can die in peace

shilolo's avatar

@uberbatman Tell us where you found the answer…Please.

augustlan's avatar

Thank god… this might have bugged me forever! But, why the “Z”?

whatthefluther's avatar

@augustlan….the parallel lines represent the barrier and the cross line would represent the break through it. I don’t know why it wasn’t among all the highway signs I looked at….must be a state thing only.

El_Cadejo's avatar

About halfway down this page i also found it here and a couple other sites. Im still going to ask at the DMV tomorrow still.

whatthefluther's avatar

@uberbatman….good job…thank you….I can sleep tonight!

Darwin's avatar

@uberbatman – Yes, thank you for a job well done. We don’t have those in Texas.

Dog's avatar

Yes! The answer! Thanks @uberbatman for hunting down the truth.

arnbev959's avatar

I bet the DMV won’t have a clue.

simone54's avatar

That’s disappointing.

simone54's avatar

They don’t know shit.

YARNLADY's avatar

thanks for the update

lederernj's avatar

On the NJ Turnpike there are “Z 1000” and ”) ( 1000” signs on the barriers. About 1000 feet past the signs are two types of breaks in the barriers. So they must be used by maintenance crews to cross over into the North/South bound lanes.

AntFer's avatar

The Z 1000 roadsign is an indication that in 1000 feet there is a break in the guard rail allowing authorized vehicles to pass between truck and cars only divided highways

Susan2015's avatar

Ok so this is what i have noticed. I too have found no info on this sign Z1000, but did notice that always 1000 feet after that sign there was an official cut through or turn around for emergency use only. Hope this helps.

TOdoubleD's avatar

It represents a break in the highway barrier 1000 ft ahead allowing official use only u turns
