General Question

When you visit another jelly's page, do you find yourself disappointed to see they haven't filled out their bio yet?

Asked by evelyns_pet_zebra (12923points) July 21st, 2009

I like to learn about what people find important in their life, what they like to do, and their hobbies and interests. A blank listing of interests, expertise, and mini bio makes me wonder if they are just too lazy to fill it out, or if they have something to hide. What are your thoughts? Is it just the new people that leave it blank? I’m not the only one that wonders about this, am I?

For me, its partially due to laziness, but more to the fact that i have no clue wtf to write. I had a hard time even coming up with my interests for mine. As far as profile stuff, i have no friggin clue what to write about myself without sounding self absorbed so i just put a quote from a song and a link to my flickr. I figure if you want to get to know me, you could always send a PM or just read my answers. :)

kenmc's avatar

I’m not too worried about it.

Ivan's avatar

Don’t really have anything to say. I don’t think you want to listen to me ramble BS.

Darwin's avatar

Sometimes it would be nice to know a little more about the jelly if they have asked a question that needs answering. Sometimes without those details the only possible answers are too vague.

Otherwise, no. Fill it out if you want, or don’t.

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

I’ll say a few things about myself but I don’t go into a lot of detail there. I think people are going to get a better impression of me by interacting with me rather than by reading what I think about myself because that’s not necessarily what others will think about me.

Facade's avatar

Mine was empty until about two seconds ago =D
But yes, that does bother me

Dog's avatar

I just assume they are not staying long enough to unpack.

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

I get a feel for people based on what they write and how they interact with others so I rarely visit the profile pages at all.

Sarcasm's avatar

Maybe that’s just part of who they are.

augustlan's avatar

I don’t mind if they don’t do the personal comments section (though I’d prefer it if they did), but I wish everyone would fill out the expertise and interests sections. A) It helps you get to know a little about the person and B) It’s a big part of how Fluther knows what questions to send you.

Bluefreedom's avatar

I don’t really find it disappointing but I do find myself wondering, every once in a while, what a certain person’s interests are and seeing a little information on someone’s profile page is more appealing to me than observing a blank slate, in my opinion. I’m just naturally inquisitive and this inquiring Jelly’s mind would like to know more about you.

Allie's avatar

I don’t really mind one way or the other. If it’s there I might read it, I might not. I’ve only got a short one because I kept getting PMs from people telling me to make one, so I put a few words up to make them happy.
Honestly, I learn much more about the person from reading their answers to questions than reading their mini bios.

jrpowell's avatar

Please let us know where you are (USA or UK) or whatever. And let us know if English isn’t your first language. Some of us check.

augustlan's avatar

I second that ^^.

Hambayuti's avatar

Auurrrrgghhh! I’m guilty! Haven’t filled up my bio. I used to think that nobody would really be interested to read about that since I pretty much don’t check profiles myself…and that you’d know more about me by the replies I leave behind. (excuses, excuses. hehehe) But since this has come up…I’ll try to fill whatever I can in the near future. =D

Ivan's avatar

Upon review of my profile, I think it says enough for you to get an accurate impression.

BBSDTfamily's avatar

I don’t think I’ve ever visited another jelly’s page.

Darwin's avatar

@BBSDTfamily I just visited yours – your interests say a great deal about you

Facade's avatar

@Darwin I like your bio :)

cookieman's avatar

I love @Dog‘s answer. Great analogy.

It does kinda bug me. I think it helps flesh out the picture a little. Plus there are practical reasons as stated by @johnpowell and @augustlan.

YARNLADY's avatar

I find it disappointing.

JLeslie's avatar

I like to see some info there…they get a free pass until 200 lurve and then I am dissappointed they have not filled it in yet.

Buttonstc's avatar

Well, I really didn’t realize that some people view it so negatively——I thought most folks just accepted whatever someone chooses to write or not, so I guess I can manage something.

However, I have a question (or perhaps just feedback) for the Mods. I have a very wide and eclectic range of interests and was dreading being inundated with an even. larger slew of questions tailor made for me by Fluther. I already have a whole bunch that are already there based upon no info at all other than my responses to other’s questions and haven’t even had the time to read through them. Plus many of the previous ones were really old but there was no way to know that until I clicked on them.

Is there any way for an individual to shut this feature off on their own acct. I assume that some people enjoy it, but I just find it unnecessarily tedious and superfluous. I just dread being flooded with even more of them based upon my profile. I am perfectly capable of reading thru the current list of questions on the site and making my own decisions on the ones to which I want to respond. I don’t need a computer algorithm to do it for me.

I do realize that I don’t have to respond to them, but it’s already irksome to see the whole bunch just sitting there week after week. Knowing that filling out the profile will just open the spigot for more is prob the biggest reason for my leaving it blank.

I guess I’m prob the only person who feels this way, but it certainly wouldn’t be the first time for quirky little ol’ me. The only thing I can liken it to is nag screens on an app which I will most likely never deem worthy to pay for the full version or the nag screen on a Forum for which I registered which keeps placing a large notice informing me that I still have yet to make a first post-as if I didn’t know that already or somehow constantly nagging me about it is going to get a favorable respone from me. We aren’t living in the Matrix yet——or maybe we are. I guess I’m a Luddite that way.

So, how do I shut the thing off or is that just an impossibility?

jbfletcherfan's avatar

Yes, it disappoints me. I like to know a little about someone. I think the setting up of an account here should make it mandatory to fill in your sex & location at least. There’s some on here that I have no idea if you’re male or female. And it does make it interesting if you list things you’re interested in.

SuperMouse's avatar

@jbfletcherfan I’m with you and evelyns pet zebra, it disappoints me. I click on someone’s profile in an attempt to learn more about that person and I am bummed when there is nothing there.

Hambayuti's avatar

I did it! I finally filled out my bio! >>> doing the Roger Rabbit dance <<< Yessss!

(whew!)

^___^

jbfletcherfan's avatar

@Hambayuti YEAAAAAA. Now drag others with you.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@Hambayuti YAY!! Now let’s see if the other new Jellies follow your shining example.

BBSDTfamily's avatar

@Darwin Just visited yours too… you were my first!

gailcalled's avatar

I miss not knowing approximately how old a person is. I write very differently to a teen or college student than to an adult.

casheroo's avatar

I don’t fill out the expertise section, but I fill out the rest…I don’t think it tells you who I am though. My answers do that.

Hambayuti's avatar

@jbfletcherfan, @evelyns_pet_zebra, @Darwin – Thank you! (takes a bow) Thank you! Much lurve…

cookieman's avatar

@Hambayuti: Now you can remove your hands from your face.

gailcalled's avatar

@Hambayuti: Another one who writes beautiful English. Depress me and tell me what your mother tongue is, please.

Hambayuti's avatar

@cprevite – one step at a time. =)

@gailcalled – Thank you. It’s Filipino. My mom is half-Filipino, half-Chinese. My dad is half-Filipino, half-Spanish

augustlan's avatar

@Buttonstc As far as I know, there is no way to turn off that feature. However, you can go to the ‘just for you’ page and ‘remove all’. That’ll put your ‘questions for you’ back at zero, for a minute anyway.

MacBean's avatar

Given my “bio,” it’d be pretty silly of me to be bothered by anyone else’s lack of info. Mine is the way it is because I’m really not sure what’s important enough to be included. I think what I have, combined with my list of interests, gives enough of a snapshot of me, though. Beyond that, I’d like people to form their opinions based on my answers, rather than something I wrote one day when I was in a certain kind of mood.

OreetCocker's avatar

Ha! have reviewed mine and it’s blank. Will fix it right now;-)

Bri_L's avatar

I don’t like it.

whitenoise's avatar

hmm… I’ll add some to my profile… and yes, I think there should be something there, although I like the anonymity as well.

gailcalled's avatar

@whitenoise: I am getting more and more depressed at you Dutchmen and your command of our language.

whitenoise's avatar

Well… you were the guys that taught us… just be proud of your students… ;-)

Bluefreedom's avatar

I revisited my own page today and was disappointed by how uninteresting my bio really was. This question inspired me to go back and improve on what I hope is a better description of myself.

gailcalled's avatar

@whitenoise: I live in an area with names like Kinderhook, Katterskill, Austerlitz and such. Albany, about 20 miles away, was founded by the Dutch (then the trading post of Fort Orange), for heaven’s sake and the historic architecture is clearly Dutch. So why aren’t there people in the area who speak Dutch?

whitenoise's avatar

Hey that’s cool… our Austerlitz is indeed only 15 miles from where I live. There’s barely more there than a couple of kiddy-rides on a forlorn amusement park, though ;-\

I guess Dutch is just too hard a language with all the sounds in it that seem to resemble a cat giving up hair balls. Either that, or it is because all the Dutch in your neighboorhood have gone underground. Pretty much like free masons. They might only speak Dutch after having exchanged the secred handshake.

gailcalled's avatar

@whitenoise: Speaking of Monty Python, are there any famous Dutch comedians? Jacques Brel was funny sometime, but I guess he was actually Flemish.

My Austerlitz is a post office, an historical society comprised of little old buildings and lots of fields and dairy cows. It is 8 miles from my home. We also have a Ghent and a Claverack. Here
is a typical view.

whitenoise's avatar

@gailcalled I admired your view…. that’s is just beautiful.
This is a view from near where I live.

And yes… we do have some very nice Dutch comedians. I fear however that Dutch humor in general doesn’t translate well.

gailcalled's avatar

@whitenoise: Lnk doesn’t work. Is it a Dutch server? Or did it just not like me? The general message was “Forbidden” and then some code.

whitenoise's avatar

should work… otherwise… well try this http://i.pbase.com/u34/willbakker/large/31162153.Bijstoomgemaal.jpg

or http://www.derodeberk.nl/Fotos%20Omgeving/Polder%20Arkemheen.jpg

My laptop battery is dying, it’s 2:49 am and the kids will wake up in 5 hours. Have to good night:-)

gailcalled's avatar

@whitenoise: For AM reading. Second link is also “Forbidden” and third one is “Not Found.” Text is in Dutch. And this appears in one of them: You don’t have permission to access /u34/willbakker/large/31162153.Bijstoomgemaal.jpg on this server.

Dog's avatar

I find it humorous that @whitenoise is trying to get @gailcalled to go to a forbidden place with him.

casheroo's avatar

I now feel bad about my bio. Someone more eloquent than me should write mine cough*gail*cough.

Dog's avatar

@casheroo maybe we can pay her to make us look classy!

kenmc's avatar

It bugs me more when someone hasn’t changed their avatar off of one of the supplied ones more than the fact that their profile isn’t filled out.

tiffyandthewall's avatar

i agree! mine isn’t very interesting, but i just feel horrible leaving it blank. maybe i’m just a creepy lurker, but i think people are interesting, and i like getting that little glimpse into their lives, that might put some of the things they say under a different light…

whitenoise's avatar

@gailcalled

Well… must be something with blocking non-Dutch visitors. Maybe they are part of the underground movement that also lives in your region. Did you try the secret handshake?

Just to avoid further hassle, I copied the pics to my private share and provide you with link below (these pictures are taken about 3 miles from my home):
