If those are your only choices I would go with Sony.

Personally I would get a Toshiba or Lenovo.

Can we please keep the “get a Mac” comments out of this.

in the shortest answer possible, hp. sony makes novelty trash. ask any tech with experience and they will tell you sony laptops are garbage

willbrawn's avatar

I second @johnpowell and go with Toshiba. Sony’s was way to overpriced.

DominicX's avatar

HP makes better laptops out of those two choices. Most people will tell you that.

@johnpowell

I was gonna say “no one say ‘get a Lenovo’”. I asked about HP vs. Dell and everyone said Lenovo. That’s not what I wanted, damn it. There was a reason why I didn’t want it.

Value is included in my definition of “better”, so I’ll go with HP.

I’m personally a fan of Dell computers…

But out of those two, I’d say HP.

I bought a HP laptop for my wife a couple Christmas’s ago, and my wife still hasn’t forgiven me.

monsoon's avatar

Can I ask why those two? Because those are two of my least favorite brands of computers.

If price is the issue, let us know. There have to be other options.

My HP laptop has gone through three hand drives and two mother boards in less than six months. I would go with Toshiba if at all possible.

I’ve had my (eBay-purchased) HP for 2.5 years now. Works a treat. I vote HP. It’s a dv6000 series widescreen, BTW.

I just got a Sony from best buy and am thinking about returning it. I paid 800 for the laptop. What should I exchange it for? I need to get a PC because it’s for work.

Steven0512's avatar

Apple or if PC is needed, Dell. Just buy a Mac and be happy.

Bri_L's avatar

Between Sony and HP Sony. I have never met anyone, including many “techs with experience” who thought HP desktops and laptops were nothing but poorly made proprietary crap.

But if you have to go name brand PC, I would buy a Dell. If it doesn’t matter price or PC, then a Mac.

willbrawn's avatar

Umm ya talking about proprietary look at Dell.

I’m not a fan of my HP. My parents have a Toshiba, and I like it better than ours…well, other than it being the largest laptop I’ve seen in a while. To them, the bigger the laptop the better.

cwilbur's avatar

If I had to get a Windows laptop, I’d probably go for a Toshiba. I don’t care for Sony build quality or business practices, I don’t know anyone who’s been happy with an HP laptop, and I’ve had bad experiences with Dell customer service.

I worked on the geek squad for almost a year, and I can say, don’t get a sony or an hp. Get an ASUS, if you’re worried about price. Small brand name, so it’s cheap, but I never hear about people hating their Asus computer. Like, ever.

If you have an $800 credit though, seriously, for $200 you can get a Mac! YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY.

Bri_L's avatar

@willbrawn – own a Dell. Never had trouble getting it to do what I want or doing to it what I want.

Icky's avatar

if you can pick only from sony or hp, hp.

if you can pick from any brand of laptop, and it’s for work, the only answer is lenovo. thinkpads are workhorses.

Bri_L's avatar

WOW, what a bunch of conflicting answers on this thread.

DominicX's avatar

@Bri_L

Well, neither one is truly “better”. The only thing you can go by is personal experience. My Dell was fine up until recently. Now it’s a piece of crap. I guess my complaint is that it should’ve lasted longer than 2 years. But I bet there are plenty out there with Dells that didn’t fail after 2 years.

Bri_L's avatar

@DominicX – very good point!

dynamicduo's avatar

If I had to pick between the two, Sony. I have never enjoyed any HP product except for printers.

But neither of them hold a candle to Lenovo laptops (which used to be IBM laptops until they sold that hardware division off). I’m using one now, and I’ve abandoned my desktop in lieu of it. T61p, it’s a workhorse indeed.

If you are going to get a laptop, make sure you get business grade.
My work gave me an HP 6510b to use in the field and I love it. I have had it for 2 years and it holds up great.
Sony laptops tends to be overpriced and low quality, but my only experience has been with consumer grades.
As for the side comments: Dell’s are garbage and I have had lots of trouble with newer think pads since Lenovo bought the brand.

Whoever starts running Mac OS first.

Bri_L's avatar

You have a tough decision a head of you.

AskBlam's avatar

Most reliable laptops are Toshiba and Asus laptops

HP’s are OK, once you remove all the preinstallaed crap.

Avoid Sony and Acer. They have the highest laptop failure rates!

monsoon's avatar

Yes, Asus! I love it. I mean, I’m a Mac user, but god Asus is so cheap and awesome.

mess121's avatar

with the money you buy a Sony of the lowest side, you can get a high-end hp.
