General Question

Have you noticed any federal stimulus programs in your area yet?

Asked by Mamradpivo (9665points) July 25th, 2009

The stimulus logo has started to show up on some highway projects here in Oregon, and I just heard on the radio that the national forest on the coast in central Oregon is about to get some much-needed infrastructure improvements, which will entail hiring quite a few people in tired communities.

Is anything going on in your area yet?

I have noticed a lot of construction near my house. A lot of the busted sidewalks are getting fixed and ungraded to be wheelchair friendly. This is also in Oregon. Specifically, along Prescott in Portland.

Yup.

On a whole bunch of highway projects around Boston (routes 93, 95 and 2).

Also a ton of local construction has popped up, but it is not readily adorned with the stimulus logo as the highway projects are. I assume they’re related.

I’m also seeing movement on long-stagnant commercial and residential construction (offices, condos, etc.). Perhaps just a coincidence.

Yes. At our work force development center

Yes. Here in NY I know of a wind energy project and a biomass alternative energy project. They will hire about 50 people (with higher education degrees) and should be sustainable in 2 years. There are lots of new road projects but I don’t know if they are stimulus funds or not.

The Community Center that I used to work at is about to get a grant to fully fund their after school computer clubhouse. This is at a time when just about all the other programs are closing or drastically paring back due to lack of funds. I was very excited when I heard.

Here in a suburb of Chicago, I have noticed some roadwork projects that have signs saying that they are a part of the stimulus plan.

Also, I heard a commercial on the radio for a “Cash for Clunkers” program that lets people get vouchers for buying new cars if their old car has poor fuel efficiency and the new one has some amount better fuel efficiency.

A friend who works for a non-profit has written more grant applications and received more grant money in the last 6 months than she did under the entire Bush administration.

Several friends who lost jobs early on have found employment; one is a dream job, that he never would have known existed, but is perfect for him.

They are trying to build a water fountain using the stimulus money in the town where I work. I am not sure how that is good usage of the money as it will only put a few construction workers to work for a very short period of time. Also, the part of town it will be located in is a well known hang out for drug deals. I realize drug dealers like pretty scenery too, but come on.

The construction on highway 22 by St Peter MN has one of those signs.

Nope, here in California millions of highway dollars are just sitting there going to waste while the “leaders” argue over whether it is necessary to dock a cows tail on a dairy farm.

@YARNLADY: The more I read about the situation in California, the worse I feel for all you residents of that fine state. What a mess.
