Was it really necessary to hold reset while I push the power button?

Of course you know I’m talk about the NES. Some games where you could “save” always asked you to hold reset while you push power to shut down. Was this really necessary? What did it do differently?

If it’s like most imbedded technology, the reset button holds it in “reset” or basically a powered-up, but off mode. This kept it from doing anything to the internal EEPROM (like reading from it, or sending random inputs to it) that might corrupt the data, while you turned it off (removing power from it).
