How does a person disable their defective car alarm?

Asked by Dog (25152points) July 27th, 2009

Our teen daughter was given a 1997 Toyota Avalon by her grandparents. In the last week the factory installed alarm has disabled the car and sounded the horn and lights without notice on three occasions while she was trying to start it.

Is there a way to permanently disable the alarm? Her car is not exactly high- risk for theft anymore.
I am concerned that she will be locked out of her car and put in a dangerous situation.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

This is also an available option.
Is there any manner in which a mechanically savvy character could remove the car alarm trigger? I’m not too certain on their specifications myself but I would imagine that this is possible.

You’ll need to get the alarm serviced, either at a Toyota dealership, or at a place that works with aftermarket alarms. Factory installed alarm systems are integrated with the engine’s computer system – the unit that controls fuel injection, emissions controls, and ignition timing, and can’t just be disconnected. There is a secondary system called an immobilizer circuit that is tied in with the ignition switch. I suspect your problem is in that unit. The unit itself can be replaced by a competent mechanic, but the computer must be reset to recognize it.

My Focus used to do that, there’s usually a button that was pressed accidently…mine was a blinking red light that I never knew what it did…until the alarm went off on a frenzy.
I’d take it to the dealership, if you don’t know where the button is.
