General Question

Does anyone else despise opinions from others that are obviously based on their having no experience in the matter?

Asked by Noel_S_Leitmotiv (2719points) July 28th, 2009

I hate it when people say motorsport drivers arent atheletes. Try it just once baby and you see.

Or that some say sports cars are just for penis compensation or for ones midlife crisis, some cars are for motorists, some cars are for drivers.

When I was going through the death of a loved one, a lot of people offered me advice and their opinions, albeit they had never lost anyone close, so it was kind of frustrating. I really despised it, because these people told me to just move on and forget about it(a day after the person had passed away) so you can imagine how upset I was.

I guess some people just love to give their opinion, especially when it’s best that they keep their mouth shut instead.

Heh. I heard one the other day. Men who are short, with small dicks tend to get big dogs.

Does it bother me? No, not really.

@Noel_S_Leitmotiv opinions are like assholes, everybody has one and they all stink. =) Seriously though, I’m not an expert in anything, as in I don’t have a college degree, but I’ve learned things in the real world that usually applies. There is really no one I can turn to for expertise on Madagascar Hissers, so I learn and share what I’ve learned.

As for automobiles, there are always going to be people with bias. I love my Toyota truck and people give me a hard time about not buying American. If the American car companies would make something comparable in value and reliability as my Toyota truck, I’d consider it. Until then, they can keep their opinions to themselves.

@Peinrikudo sorry for your loss. I have lost many a dear friend and family member, and it is hard to deal with. You have to move on at your own pace. People need to realize that you need to grieve at your own pace. To say forget about it and move on is cruel and callous. Welcome to Fluther.

@jmah I am tall and have a small dog, I wonder what they say about that? If you are going to judge a person by the size of their dog, then the person doing the judging is obviously an idiot.

@Peinrikudo – I am so sorry for your loss and that you were treated that way. That was truly wrong. For what it is worth, welcome to Fluther.

As far as the question, if they get all upiddy about it, it riles me a bit at first but find it funny almost immediately.

@Noel_S_Leitmotiv – what is a driver? No sarcasm ment at all. I don’t know much about sports cars or racing. I like classic cars.

Jude's avatar

@evelyns_pet_zebra I agree. As you said, opinions are like yutz(s) – we all have one and they’re stinky. When people say things like that, I don’t let it get to me. Truly could care less what they say. :)

From Dictionary.com Athlete: a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength; a participant in a sport, exercise, or game requiring physical skill.

Race car drivers are not athletes. And no I am not a race car driver, but I have driven really fast, in traffic.

Plus, I’ve never been the president or a parent, but I can certianly have opinions about the president or parents. Don’t you have opinions about things you’ve never experienced?

Noel_S_Leitmotiv's avatar

By your definition drivers are athletes:

Driving in competition requires physical agility, stamina, and strength. Racing certainly requires physical skill.

Darwin's avatar

I don’t despise them, but I might pity them. Or ignore them completely.

Life is too short.

tinyfaery's avatar

Physical agility? I think your pushing it.

@Noel_S_Leitmotiv – So here “Or that some say sports cars are just for penis compensation or for ones midlife crisis, some cars are for motorists, some cars are for drivers.” the drivers refer to race car drivers?

@tinyfaeryhere is an article that breaks it down scientifically.

I agree with you because, although I’m not a fan of the sport, I can honestly say i respect sports drivers. For example: NasCar. I don’t like watching but i know for a fact that those cars are moving ovens! I respect the men’s endurance through that extreme heat, and their concentration to drive so accurately at such high speeds…
And I say “uhm..no.” to that penis compensation thing…that’s what people should be saying about people who do nothing but flaunt their money and posessions..

Yes, Two feet simultainiously manipulating three pedals+ left foot braking = physical agility.

@Bri_L

By my definition a motorist is one who uses a car for commuting or transportation.

On the other hand a driver is one who is engaged in the activity of driving first (getting to ones destination if there is one is a pleasant dividend).

Bri_L's avatar

@Noel_S_Leitmotiv – OOOooo Ok. Sorry. I was just confused. I kept trying to work that sentence into racing and all that.

Sorry.

I know what you mean. I know squat about cars. But when I am with a “driver” and they are explaining things and showing me their car I can see why they get excited and I get excited to.

I also know I had a hell of a lot more fun driving my manual two seater CRX than my automatic 4 door family Sentra. And that little car wasn’t even a sports car.

I don’t deny it’s hard, or that there is strength and skill needed, but you need all those things for bowling, too, and I wouldn’t call a bowler an athlete. My opinion.

tiffyandthewall's avatar

not always. sometimes it’s an outer perspective. but in the cases you gave, yeah, those people are jerks.

Darwin's avatar

Not all bowlers are athletes, just as not all guys who play pick-up games of basketball a couple times a year are athletes. However, the guys (and gals) who can reliably score over 200, or who have multiple 600 rings, or who can bowl in a three-day tournament, scoring well in game after game, are indeed athletes.

Just try it and you will see how hard it is physically and mentally. Or don’t try it – your lower back and your shoulders will thank you.

Bri_L's avatar

@Darwin – VERY cool perspective.
