Is there a firewire to usb adapter?

Asked by danafc (2points) July 28th, 2009

I have an old ipod with, I think a fire wire connection and was wondering if there was a cheap converter to covert it to usb so I can use it on my laptop.

Sounds like this device is a Firewire to USB adapter.

When did iPods have a firewire connection? I don’t think that’s what you got.

You should be ok with simply buying a USB cable for your ipod to replace the firewire cable you have.. No converter necessary! iPods are not firewire/usb specific with the exception of which cable you wish to have in the box when you buy it.

except the ipod has a fire wire connection on the top of it and that is the cable needed to connect it

I’m not aware of any ipod with a direct firewire connection? Is there not this type of connector on it at all?

Are you sure you’re not calling another MP3 player an iPod??

no it is one of the really old 10gb ones that looks like this with the connection on top:

no sorry sandy doesn’t help much, it needs firewire at on end and usb at the other

Older ones were firewire only. I know my original 5Gig one was only Firewire.

Typically the older ipods are firewire/USB agnostic, so either one would work.. As you can see depicted with this product..

Anyway from seeing your photo, I believe that that ipod may still have the elongated plug that I linked to before.. If so, borrow a friend’s ipod/iphone USB cable and try it out.. If it works, use one of those, if not, as johnpowell states, try a $20 knock-off or a newer model. You’ll be glad you did.

Man, to be honest, you should really get a newer (used) ipod.. I would imagine that particular model wouldn’t hold a charge very well being so old.

Good luck!

The oldest iPods were FireWire only, and many were Mac-only.

Later on, with the third generation iPods, the Dock Connector was introduced, but only worked with FireWire.

Sometime after that, dual FireWire and USB cables to connect to the Dock Connector were introduced. But older iPods required you to connect to FireWire, and newer iPods required you to connect to USB. I don’t think there was ever an iPod that was USB/FireWire agnostic.
