How do I learn with a pen tablet?

Asked by derekpaperscissors (631points) July 29th, 2009

Just got myself a pen tablet for a gift and I’m wondering how to maximize it. I like art and dabbled around with photo editing a few times too. Would appreciate help on tutorials, usage, programs on using a pen tablet for graphic design & editing.

I just bought one myself, they pretty much will work with any program out of the box. I use mine with GIMP and I didn’t have to do anything to set it up.

Yep, it should work with any program you have, although if you’re interested in graphic design professionally I assume you have the adobe suite, or at least access to it. Just start practicing, most people I know who use a tablet are self-taught and seemed to picked it up pretty quickly, although this could be because they are already designers/photographers. For that kind of work a tablet is a lot more intuitive than a mouse.

If you really have no idea where to start, maybe look for intro to graphic design or graphic illustration classes at a local community college. Do make sure that they’re computer-based, or contact someone there to see what you should take – at the university I went to, intro to graphic design was all drawing by band, no computers involved!

I suggest reading the information guide that came with your tablet. I have a few Wacom models, and the driver installation comes with a little config program that lets you configure all the buttons on the pen/tablet depending on what app you are in, this is super duper handy for pretty much every program. I have it set up so that in Photoshop one of my pen buttons is undo, another could be whatever tool I’m using most often, etc.

Hopefully your tablet came with some software such as Painter. Painter is so fun to use with a tablet, they have tons of different brush strokes etc. Of course you can do most of this in Photoshop too, but if you’ve been given the software, take a look at it!

What other programs do you have in terms of graphic/photo editing?

Personally I didn’t feel the tablet was hard enough to warrant using tutorials, but if I were having problems in a certain program I would google ”[program name] tablet configure” and would usually get some help.
