Social Question

What's your favorite social networking site, and why?

Asked by Chongalicious (2771points) July 29th, 2009

I, personally like Facebook the most…even if certain areas, such as photosharing, have been executed more efficiently on other sites, and are easier to use. So, which one is your favorite, and why? What sites have executed each area of networking the best? (For example, I think Facebook is the best in terms of updating you on what’s going on, and their message and comment system is the best in my opinion.) Or, do you even like social networking sites? Why or why not?

I don’t particularly “like” any of them, but like many others I use Facebook because it’s the one network that all my other friends have joined.

Hmmm… how about.. fluther? >.>

Chongalicious's avatar

@BhacSsylan haha I thought someone might say that lol
But I don’t really consider this a social networking site…more like an information networking site.

BhacSsylan's avatar

well, it probably technically isn’t, but it has enough similarities i’d thought i’d put it out there. and I wanted to be silly.

Chongalicious's avatar

haha I could tell =)
and good point, though…

Definitely facebook. good for photo sharing, status updating, locating people. The best thing about it is that EVERYONE and their mother is on facebook now. It’s easy to find people.

Chongalicious's avatar

@photographcrash haha speaking of mothers…MY mom is on there!!! lol

photographcrash's avatar

@Chongalicious mine too! and my aunts/uncles/cousins/etc. It kinda forces you to clean up your online act!

Chongalicious's avatar

@photographcrash exactly! good thing I know how to get a joke across without profanity 24/7!!! inlike some of my friends lol
and yea pretty much anyone in my family who knows how to use a CPU will be on there! EVEN my Grandma!!!

I’m on most of them and I use facebook regularly (like once a week). They are all boring, I only visit facebook because that’s where most of my friends are. @BhacSsylan I was going to say Fluther too cause I spend more time here! What about pogo? I like that one for the games, but is it a social networking site?

Chongalicious's avatar

@ShanEnri pogo is incredibly fun! buuut I don’t think it would qualify…not sure becaues I haven’t visited for a while.

filmfann's avatar

Facebook, because it is the most popular.
A social networking site needs to have lots of people you want to connect with.

Besides Fluther, I guess I would say last.fm. It’s really the only other place besides Fluther where I have stuck. Must mean something.

I like Plurk (www.plurk.com). It takes some getting used to, but it is something like a structured Twitter, where you post a “Plurk” about what you are doing or thinking along a “timeline” and your “friends” answer you in the same plurk, enabling a conversation. It really is quite social, and I have met people there whom I later arranged to see in meatland.

Blondesjon's avatar

I am also a Fluther man, through and through.

@ragingloli . . .meh

SuperMouse's avatar

I like facebook mostly because a lot of my family is on there and so are many jellies!

ru2bz46's avatar

@pdworkin Lurve for “meatland”!

Chongalicious's avatar

@SuperMouse I’m starting to see that many jellies really are there lol
The reason I asked this question is because many of my friends from school don’t like Facebook because it’s “too plain”, but I don’t like having to have a MySpace to talk to them because there is entirely too much spam there and just useless things…and people.

Bluefreedom's avatar

I’m going to go with Fluther because it is the best. Fluther is terrific….FTW. Someone told me about a place called Fluther that completely kicks ass in every way possible. Does it get any better than Fluther?

TheCreative's avatar

Yes yes Fluther is very good. We all know that. I really like the social networking site called BrightKite because it lets me know what is going on around my area. (Partys, free hot dogs, once in a lifetime sale..) It’s similar to Google Latitude. If you are too scared to enter your information you don’t need to and you can select sertain people who you trust who can only see your information accurately. It has FaceBook connectivity so you can update your profile or your Twitter account.

The User Interface I might add, is also very attractive
Here’s the Brightkite iPhone App.

wow, @TheCreative, very insightful, and just the kind of answer I was looking for!

@Chongalicious As a matter of Fluther etiquette, it is appropriate to click @TheCreative‘s “Great Answer” link to show a little lurve for answering your question so well. Here, I’ll start…

@ru2bz46 oops! I was planning to do that, then it slipped my mind..=/ thanks for reminding me! lurve for your answer haha

tiffyandthewall's avatar

i still like myspace…

Chongalicious's avatar

@tiffyandthewall what parts of MySpace are better/the best? I wanna know haha

tiffyandthewall's avatar

@Chongalicious haha. well, while i have kind of adjusted to facebook, since everyone seems to have migrated there over night, i feel like myspace is more fun. the first thing that i really got into on myspace was how you can discover bands, especially local ones. i don’t like that facebook doesn’t have a music player or anything like that. so i guess music is #1 for me. then, i gotta admit, i like messing around with my profile. i like changing my background and doing all that silly stuff.
plus, all of those apps and whatnot annoy me. though, that’s pretty irrelevant now, since myspace has adopted ripped off nearly every single one from facebook. i do those silly ‘pick 5’ things once in awhile, but in general, it’s just kind of overkill.

i really like the like button on facebook though. i think that’s the main draw in to facebook. i love that i can see something and just click ‘like’ without having to actually say something. :p

Chongalicious's avatar

@tiffyandthewall I have those same dislikes and likes, overall. But it seems to me that myspace has just become too crowded with people who I’ve never even seen a day in my life who are always trying to hit on me, or whatever. That’s why I use my facebook account more often. It just runs a little more fluid, and I lurve how the homepage is actually active, so you don’t have to refresh it constantly to see what’s going on. However I do still love the personalization options on MySpace…which is why I started this discussion…I wanted the opinion of the collective and to see if there was something out there even better, that was like a happy medium…

OpryLeigh's avatar

It was Bolt when that had the tagbooks. Now I don’t have a favourite but I use Facebook and Myspace. On Myspace I don’t really care who I add as a “friend”. Apart from bands, if people request to be my “friend” I will usually accept. On Facebook I will on be friends with people I actually know in real life.

Chongalicious's avatar

@Leanne1986 I’m the same way. Do you think there’s a particular reason why people tend to be more carefree on MySpace?

OpryLeigh's avatar

@Chongalicious I really don’t know, funny eh?! In my case it may be because I was a lot younger when I joined Myspace and I was alot less worried about privacy then and the habit has just stuck. When I finally got round to joining Facebook I was more worried about what people could or couldn’t see so, when it came to adding or accepting friends, I started as I meant to continue, by only adding “real life” friends.

I have more personal information on Facebook than I do on Myspace anyway!

Chongalicious's avatar

@Leanne1986 It is funny! I like to think it’s because people on MySpace as a whole…now I’m not saying everyone is, but as a whole, people on that site tend to be less mature as I’ve found. On Facebook; I’ve never gotten one of those random “Hey, sexy.” messages or comments. But, on MySpace; OY! It’s every 10–15 minutes that some poor lonely schlub will try to harrass you! I think it’s sad…it makes me want to interview Tom to see what he’d have to say about it.

OpryLeigh's avatar

@Chongalicious You do have a point there! lurve for using the word schlub! I love it

Chongalicious's avatar

@Leanne1986 (I learned that word from Mr. Deeds with Adam Sandler haha…If only there was a way to give him the lurve…)

Mrgelastic's avatar

I would have to say twitter. i’ve had it for months now and its only been useful.
