When to buy plane tickets to Japan?

Asked by Akkifokkusu (38points) July 29th, 2009

So I’m planning a trip to Japan (Tokyo) for about 10 days at the end of December (flying from Los Angeles). I’ve been looking at ticket prices for weeks now, and not only have some prices gone down, new flights with even cheaper prices have popped up. So I’m wondering, will prices keep dropping (and if so, until when), or should I just get the cheapest ticket I can right now?

Check out Farecast. If you put in your travel locations and times, it’ll help you pick the best time to buy.

There are a lot of internet sites that promise you the best rates, but I think a professional tour office is the best way to get what you need.

Not sure as to when, but if you find a deal with Japan Airlines take it! They are incredible and would bend over backwards for their customers. Japan is an amazing place. Hope you have a great time!

This is just anecdotal experience from having traveled back and forth from Japan/US around that same time period..I think it might be best to book sooner rather than later because oshogatsu (around New Years) is a big travel time to/from Japan .

Lots of airlines are having fall travel fare sales now – so, if you’re seeing what looks like a good rate – I’d go ahead and book. (I’d say a “good rate” to Japan from the West Coast would be something under $1,000. Something as low as $600–900 would be excellent.)

Booking later than September and I imagine (again, just based on past experience) the fares would be heading back up in price. This is all just my humble guess.

@nikipedia Sadly, Farecast doesn’t have predictors for LA – Tokyo flights. Such a shame, too…
