Is it considered OK not to shave on casual Friday?

Asked by GrimMeeper (52points) July 29th, 2009

I’m very lazy, and shaving takes an additional 10 minutes in the morning I can spend in bed. Is it ok for me to be this lazy on a casual day at work, when I go in jeans and t-shirt?

Where do you work? Mcdonalds. An office. Labor gang in the city streets? You will probably be required to shave regardless of relaxed dress code.

Depends are you a guy or girl?

chicadelplaya's avatar

Guess it may depend on the environment you work in. If they are a lax company and you need to spend those extra 10 minutes in bed, don’t shave. Big deal. It’s Friday. Party.

Not in most workplaces. Casual means dress down, not slob.

As long as your company doesn’t prohibit facial hair in the first place, I can’t see why this would be a problem on any day. I mean, you don’t want to look unkempt, but a five o’clock shadow isn’t exactly offensive. :)

Fridays or Saturdays are the most important days to look good. There are more chances you’ll meet new people outside from work in these days, especially if you go out during the weekends. That being said, it depends whether you look good unshaved or better with a clean shave.

If you can get away with jeans and a t-shirt, I don’t see why it would be such a big deal to forgo shaving for the day.

i’ve yet to have a job, nor am i a dude (because i’m assuming we’re talking facial hair), but since when does skipping a day of shaving = dirty slob? i’m terribly confused. i mean, i guess if your beard pulls onea these after one morning without shaving, you might have a problem, but…

Zendo's avatar

@tiffyandthewall Unfortunately, the gang in charge of appearances has deemed that two and three day old whiskers are no-nos and slovenly. I quit working in the mainstream job market because of such infantile thinking. (I also refuse to wear a suit or tie. The tie is too close to a slave collar. The suit is a joke)

I only go to the office cleanly shaven maybe one or two days in the week, I know it’s looked down upon but I have quite sensitive skin and if I shave every day it gets really irritated.

I was one of but a handful of employees in a very large conservative company who never dressed down on casual Friday. Of course, I was already and always going against the norm thanks to the pony tail that stretched nearly to my waist, and I just didn’t want to push my luck and expose the hippie behind the corporate disguise. It worked very well for twenty years.

derekpaperscissors's avatar

@Zendo again haha. I’d have to agree with you on that. I’m still in corporate though. Manage to sneak in wearing chucks though, when the bosses aren’t around.

Also, I might add: Until someone specifically tells you that you must shave every day, you don’t have to. If someone says something then you can always start shaving on Friday, but until then, just don’t worry about it.

Damn_Tony's avatar

I don’t have facial hair yet, (berly growing). But unless it is a rule at your work don’t do it if you don’t want to

Zendo's avatar

@derekpaperscissors Keep on sticking it to the man, dude. We’ve got to hit them every chance we get. Their numbers swell daily and we freethinkers are in the minority.

whatthefluther's avatar

@Zendo…....yes, but your numbers are swelling the unemployment lines, so victory to you

Zendo's avatar

@whatthefluther LOL. I am not unemployed, dude. I just don’t work in the slave market most people work in.

whatthefluther's avatar

@Zendo….Nor are you representing a company with a service or product to sell, unless, of course, your image happens to match the desired market, which of course is possible. Success is not determined by a particular image but by the proper match of image and target. I would have loved exposing my “hippiness” if I could have secured a job with the challenges and compensation I sought. But, I made a partial mismatch work!
PS: Some may say I sold out, but I can assure you it was for tons ands tons of money.

Zendo's avatar

@whatthefluther Agreed. I know many people who were forced to join ‘em when they couldn’t beat ‘em.
Such a shame to be forced to give up such incredible freedom of expression and self in order to pay the bills.

Alas, the energy forcing us to conform to the establishment is powerful indeed.

whatthefluther's avatar

@Zendo….Agreed….sometimes you have to play the game. But, I still had/have my hair which did make a statement of my individuality and indicated I had enough confidence in my knowledge and abilities to take the risk. And, my “peace flag” flew as soon as I pulled out of the parking lot in my shiny new car or one of my motorcycles! Compromise can work sometimes (I did not need to compromise core principles…just appearance). Peace bro’!

@whatthefluther When you said, ”...my “peace flag” flew…” it reminded me of a song by Neil Young called “Almost Cut My Hair!”

“This is cool” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tb4irSs538

@Zendo…. Yup, that’s where I got the phrase, tho it was a David Crosby song on the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young album Deja Vu. I was sixteen when that album was released….it’s a classic and a favorite of mine. Thanks for the link….you have good taste! My next hit is in your honor. Peace!

Haven’t shaved in 2 going on 3 weeks. Having scruff on your face isn’t considered slovenly as long as you shave your neck a little and don’t look like Grizzly Adams.

girlofscience's avatar

Yeah, I think it is. My boyfriend works in a typical office that requires business casual Monday-Thursday and allows jeans on Friday. He’s more likely to sport the 5-o’clock shadow on Friday, and it’s never been a problem.
