Do You Dislike Flutherites Changing Their Picture? Or Do You Just Identify w/ The Name?

Asked by BBSDTfamily (6839points) July 31st, 2009

I tend to skim the pictures and like when I can recognize people that way. If a regular Flutherite changed their picture I think that it would take a little while for people to recognize them, because at first people would scan the picture and not look at the name, but assume it’s a newbie….

I think everyone should have a specific picture and keep it! (Unless they ever give us bigger pictures… then maybe I can pick something besides a dang tree and have people be able to see what it is :)

all about the name recognition.

though I am kind of sad when someone changes a notorious picture…

I think it’s fun to see how blonsjon and jonsblond match up.

A loong time ago, there was a glitch in Fluther which made it so it didn’t display Flutherite’s pictures. People were discussing this and they too were always looking at people’s pictures. I do change my picture from time to time but keep them similar and make them stand out. Ex: Bright Gold Star.

Example: Here’s my old Fluther picture. Here’s my new one. Sorry about the size, I know the first one’s a bit small.

Your name also makes a big difference. If your name is somthing like ”fluther27cul” people are less likely to remember you by your user name.

I used to search for a good avatar that would go along with my name but honestly it’s a little difficult to keep it G rated, so I just stick with pictures of me, makes things easier.

besides, I’m a stud muffin anyway…

I typically get used to the avatars, but if I see one that’s new, I check the name.
What confuses me is multiple users with the same default avatar. Especially when one’s asking a question and the other is answering it. Or when they have differing opinions. I have to stop and go, “Wait.. what?”

@phoenyx as do I. I don’t like now that Jonsblond’s avatar has black hair(Seeing as how she’s, well, Jon’s blond).

minor edit, changed “brunette” to “has black hair”

I used to go by avatars, but since people can change them, I go by screen names now. changing avatars is fun stuff

Nahhh… I’m fine with people changing their avatars. It’s nice to see how people’s tastes change. Of course, you can’t do it too often, else it just starts to become confusing.

The only reason why people scan the pictures first is because we’re visual creatures. For me, I tend to go for both, especially if I don’t recognise the avatar, after which I’ll start associating the name with the avatar.

@phoenyx Me too. It’s really cute and adorable and makes one dreamily go.. “Sigh… Love…”

Variety is the spice of and so on and so forth…...

As long as Astro never changes his!!!

I prefer the avatar remain static. Those changing icons give me an ice cream headache.
Hey, Marina! Where’d that ninja jelly go?

ABoyNamedBoobs03's avatar

@AstroChuck how the hell are you almost at 20k?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

my lurve obviously is shamed to show it’s face around your almighty Lurve for it is clearly outclassed and outdone.

AstroChuck's avatar

Dude, I’m not even that close to 19K yet, let alone 20,000.

ABoyNamedBoobs03's avatar

bah, you’re only 1365 away.

I remember people by avatars so when they change them, it takes me awhile to get used to it. Especially on sites like this when the avatar is so small.

So yes I dislike when people change their avatar.

Tink's avatar

Its just because he’s AstroChuck, there’s no other reason….or is there??

I like it when they keep their avatar for a while, I don’t think it would be the same to me if they kept changing it.

Sometimes I like to change display pictures around special occasions or holidays like Christmas for a short period of time. (Ex: Add Christmas colours).

OpryLeigh's avatar

I tend to recognise peoples names more than anything but there are some pictures that stand out and I automaticaly know who they are. @rooeytoo for example!

rooeytoo's avatar

@Leanne1986 – could it be the ears????? or the adorable black nose.

OpryLeigh's avatar

@rooeytoo the ears are spectacular! seriously though, anyone who has a canine friend as their picture automatically gets my vote!

rooeytoo's avatar

My Town Dog thanks you. She thinks her ears are one of her best parts as well.

jeanna's avatar

I change my sometimes. It’s probably confusing to people right now because boots and I have the same picture up. :)

jonsblond's avatar

I would be upset if @AstroChuck or @gailcalled changed their avatars. Other than that I really don’t mind (obviously). I liked how @AstroChuck added antlers to his avatar for Christmas.

@Sarcasm I try my best to keep my avatars blond. Maybe I should be Sally and Jon should be Linus?

fireinthepriory's avatar

I go by avatars mainly, which does get confusing when people use the default ones and there are more than one person in a question with the same one. Especially if they’re on opposite sides of an argument – I once saw two of the same avatar having an intense back-and-forth, and it was a mindfuck to keep track of while reading!

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

As long as you have an easily recognizable name, changing your avatar doesn’t really matter. That’s why people should put more thought into a really great Fluther name.

I do like that blondesjon and jonsblonde keep their avatars gender specific, as I often confuse them. Probably won’t happen when I meet them in person and see that blondesjon has smaller breasts. :P

tiffyandthewall's avatar

both. most people i go more by their name than their avatar, but sometimes when they change their avatar i’m like ‘wait what’ and double check. and hey, the avatar and name are only like a centimeter away! it’s hard to notice one without the other.
