How do I answer a personal ad?

Asked by DryaUnda (176points) January 10th, 2008

In particular, I’m referring to those in the casual encounters section on Craigslist. What should I include? How should I include it? What can (or should) I leave out?

I would think it would depend on the ad you are answering and how you want to present yourself.

Include as many specific personal details as you would like to share with a total stranger who is quite possibly lying about his or her name / age / gender / income / place of birth / current occupation / current marital status / current residence. In brief, don’t give up any specific personal detail

The best advice I’ve ever received is to tell them something they don’t already know. In other words, don’t tell them “Hey, I read your ad (they know) ... and I’m interested (they know)... and I’m single and available (they know). etc etc etc”. These responses get lost in the herd.

Instead tell them the one detail that will make you stand out. “I love modern art and plan to visit the Museum of Modern Art at lunchtime and would meet you there.”

Good luck. Happy hunting.
