Suggestions for a good desk chair?

Asked by wildpotato (15224points) August 1st, 2009

My requirements: under $500, armless or very low or adjustable-height armrests, rolling base, decadently comfortable (lumbar support!), and preferably the kind with a liquid compressor and not a gas compressor – or a gas compressor kind not made in China (because of this – though maybe I don’t have to worry about that issue if I buy a good-quality chair).

Costco is selling some nice Herman Miller chairs. I sat in them the other day and wanted them. Here’s a link

You’re probably better off going to Staples/Office Depot/whatever and seeing which chair feels best (since a lot of the time this whole chair thing is just a matter of personal preference). You can ask the sales people there about all these things.

I will make a suggestion however, get an exercise ball as your chair. More and mores studies are proving that people who use exercise balls as office chairs are more alert and have better posture. The reason: Your body must make all these subconscious muscle movements to keep yourself balanced, so it keeps the blood flowing. If you slouch, you fall over. Just a suggestion, though, I’m not saying they’re for everyone.

On a similar question, I answered: I bought a very nice Sealy Posturepedic chair, or as they call it, a “seating system” (by the same folks who make the mattresses). I bought mine from OfficeMax at a close-out price (they discontinued selling them). It is an attractive chair, has lots of levers for adjustment and is very, very comfortable. Mine is microfiber tho they also have leather models.

On a very different question, which asked the difference between modern and antiquated cuddling, I provided the following answer which describes additional benefits of the Sealy Posturepedic office chair: I can’t imagine any cuddle being antiquated, but speaking as someone who is himself antiquated (56 y.o.), I’ve always preferred cuddles with as much contact as possible. That’s what makes spooning as alluring as it is. Similarly, sitting in my lap facing away is nice, but thanks to an infinitely adjustable ergonomic chair, sitting in my lap and facing me allows for some very pleasant and intense contact. If you get the seat to the proper height and with just a bit of a tilt (both front up or down work as they shift weight differently, so do both, switching periodically to provide nuance) and the arms forward to provide leg clearance but still in position and at the proper height to allow lift, and if you exercise due caution with the back release (do not release with the center of gravity towards the back, but with weight properly centered it allows for deeper….well, I think you may get the picture), well I’m hardly talking merely cuddling anymore, but give it a try, experiment and keep adjusting….it certainly works for us. Wait a minute…..ergo chairs are modern, so that’s modern cuddling (and beyond) and everything else is antiquated, right? Hey, did I win this one? No matter….I feel like a winner when we cuddle, etc., in this manner. Hey @sccrowell, I’m sure you could use a break…come on over here and have a seat. What? Remove the arms completely?! Ah…OK! Better wrap your arms around my neck tight, and no, those are not in my way there and yes, don’t worry, I’ll sneak a breath here and there…now hold on tight and….whoopee! You guys can move on now.

The Sealy Posturepedic chair is a winner for me.

I know some people rave about the expensive Herman Miller chair. I think it’s over rated. I’ve used one before and after a while I realized that it was more comfortable to sit BACK in than it was to use while I was working on the computer. My advice is to go to Office Depot and USE the chair like you would at your desk. It’s an investment, so don’t shop price, get the one that helps you work.
