Why did my TV turn itself on last night when I was in bed?

Asked by nebule (16452points) August 3rd, 2009

I had switched it off as usual, not on standby but by the button on the TV. It has never come back on again on it’s own accord before…and it was about an hour after I had switched it off…

Likely a stray infrared signal (like those a TV remote sends) from another source.

Didn’t you once have something strange happen with a remote controlled toy car in your place as well? There must be something in your environment generating IR signals.

You sure you switched it off at the TV ?
Could someone have came in and pressed the button , maybe you sleepwalked and put it on ..

Quagmire's avatar

Yep! Sounds like ghosts! Better get a priest in, quick.

nebule's avatar

oh stop it guys!!...seriously…?? Ghosts? it did make me run up the stairs in fright after I had turned it off again… :-/

yes it was me with the toy car.. but it was turned off properly so any remote signals wouldn’t manage to switch it on would they… I don’t know… I was kind of hoping someone would say…definitely not ghosts…

could it be a surge of electricity..???

Quagmire's avatar

Nope. Only ghosts do that sort of thing. Look up “Paranormal Investigators” on Google.

Booooooooo

@lynneblundell You can turn it on with the remote via the remote’s IR signal, so a stray IR signal from another source could also turn it on.

Quagmire's avatar

I’m not sure, but I think you’re supposed to go towards the light.

sandystrachan's avatar

If ghosts were real , how could they turn anything on since the ghost wouldn’t be of physic power or being to do such things .

If it was turned off at the TV button and not at the remote, i doubt a signal from remote or similar would turn it on . It would have had to been pressed in , a cat or something or someone switched it on was the house empty ?

Harp's avatar

@sandystrachan On most TVs, turning the TV off from the button doesn’t make it impossible to then turn on with the remote.

Quagmire's avatar

Seriously, was the remote upside down? When the remote is upside down, buttons on it can accidentally get pressed in by the weight of the remote. Also, are there OTHER remotes in the area that might be upside down? My vcr and dvd remotes can turn the TV on and off. Maybe you put something on one of these other remotes?

nebule's avatar

I’m pretty sure they were all on the mantle-piece but will see what happens tonight…

HappyFox's avatar

I used to have a cat that would lie on top of the TV/stereo/satellite/etc remotes and often find he’d turned equipment on as he shifted about.

The stray IR signal is probably more plausible in your situation though!

Quagmire's avatar

@lynneblundell, they were all on the mantle-piece? I don’t suppose you noticed any flying through the air?

Who ya gonna call?! GHOSTBUSTERS!

Bri_L's avatar

Some tvs have a sleep or wake function.

Is it possible this was set buy accident?

nebule's avatar

@Bri_L nope…

@Quagmire lmao! like it !!

I think what is more weird about this occurrence is that I’m heavily into studying religion and spiritual matters at the moment…and the last time in my life when I was going through a period of investigating spirituality weird stuff started happening to me then as well… and so…well it’s freaked me out a little…

However, I am more than happy to believe that it is mere electrical matter… and IR waves etc….

@lynneblundell – yuh-hunnnnhhhh! :-)

wwwhat?

I used to have a TV that turned on whatever the power went out and came back on.

Quagmire's avatar

Sounds to me like you’ve opened up a portal to another dimension. I hate when that happens.

nebule's avatar

right…I’m going to bed…I’m whispering in case they hear… If I don’t post in the morning…send out a search party!!

chyna's avatar

My friend had a tv that would turn on or off (depending on what mode it was in at the time) when she put up the ironing board. For some reason, the pitch of the legs lowering set the tv on/off.

Jeruba's avatar

Wouldn’t be the first time we’d watched anxiously all night, waiting for lynneblundell to report back in that she was all right.

chyna's avatar

@Jeruba Yes, I seem to recall someone was in her apartment one long night that I thought she was being kidnapped.

Jeruba's avatar

That girl lives dangerously. Mad intruders and ghosts—what next?

Hopefully, Jack79. :)

Hello!!! – I figured it out!!

Well..initially…I went to bed and then realised that whenever my TV comes on (when I turn it on) the sounds is always muted..because that’s the way it’s been stored… So of course this freaked me out even more because I thought that if it had come on through a surge of electricity or stray IR waves or because the remote control was in a precarious position and slipped and the tv accidentally turned on… then…the sound but not have been on…and therefore it would have not alerted me… So i then figured that it must have been a ghost trying to get my attention!!!

ARGGHHHHHHH so for about 10 minutes I was reeeeally freaked out… but then…

I realsied that I had been watching a DVD on Sunday night and must have turned the TV off but not turned the DVD off… Basically I think there is a built in program within the DVD player that at the end of the film it will return to the main menu and then if after a certain amount of time…(must have been an hour) if no options are selected the DVD turns off and the box reverts to Television, which must have prompted the TV to turn on… I think! This happens when the TV is on and I’ve fallen asleep watching a DVD and it’s reverted to the main menu..so the TV must autoimatically fire up if the DVD shuts down…

Or…
it could still be a ghost! lol

Not just a lunatic after all!!

…..................................................

You guys are so funny!! with the strange man…Yes that was me…oh dear!!

Quagmire's avatar

That’s exactly what the ghosts WANT you to think.

Quagmire's avatar

I tell ya, if it happens again, I think it’s WAY PAST the time you start checking hubby’s body for the numbers “666”. Start with the hair on his head (assuming he has some). Do NOT forget the pubic hair.

sandystrachan's avatar

Most common place to find ’ 666 ’ is behind the right ear .

nebule's avatar

ssshh don’t tell them…but I don’t have a hubby

Better yet, unplug the TV, and if it still turns itself on, then…
... run the hell outta there!

Because they’re here!
