Do you know of any scholarships to study the Arabic language?

Asked by bezdomnaya (1440points) August 3rd, 2009

Specifically ones that are not necessarily for current students. I’m a recent grad and would like to spend a year or so studying Arabic in Egypt or Jordan or somewhere else. I’m looking at getting a Fulbright. Do you know of any other ones?

Thanks Marina! If anyone has any personal experience they’d like to share, that would be great as well.

fulbright is a good start. a friend of mine from kuwait got one to come to the states (because dialogue between the US and the middle east has become increasingly important, so it is well funded).

arabic is the new hot thing (just like russian was during the cold war!) so there should be many different options.

another option is government work… that is mostly either military or foreign affairs/ diplomat type work. but if you wanted to make a career out of it you could look into that…

good luck! it would be cool to have a fulbright flutherite!

The military will teach you if you go into intelligence.

Try also American University in Beirut; Bir Zeit University in the West Bank; and look up Arabic language institutes in Cairo… usually Arabic study is not terribly expensive, and often the institutes themselves offer scholarships; many of them also offer “total immersion”, including monitored contact with local native speakers. Arabic is a complicated but beautiful language – good luck, and enjoy!
