How many times have you moved?

Asked by samanthabarnum (885points) August 3rd, 2009

I’ve moved 9 times in my life now, and I’m pretty young (19). So my question to you is how many times you’ve moved, roughly how old you are, and if you feel like it’s too much or too little. Do you feel unsettled in your life and how much you’ve moved around? Or do you feel grounded and restless?

I moved from the dinner table to the recliner about two hours ago. Later I’ll move to the bed. I think that’ll about be it for tonight.

AstroChuck's avatar

Seriously, about six times in my life. All within Sacramento.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@AstroChuck what, did your neighbors file petitions to get you out of the other five neighborhoods each time?

samanthabarnum's avatar

@AstroChuck Do you feel like you haven’t experienced enough of the world at all?

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

I’ve moved about ten times in my life. That averages out to about once a decade.

AstroChuck's avatar

@evelyns_pet_zebra- They pay me to leave. I’ve been where I am now for the last 19 years. I’m holding out for more this time.

Around 10 times in Tennessee, Alabama, and Oregon. Im 27. Im a Ramblin Man so I will probably move again in the near future. I am totallly grounded and restless. I have been here too long. I feel im wasting my younger years not exploring the world.

samanthabarnum's avatar

@evelyns_pet_zebra So… That means you’re like, 100?

Facade's avatar

Zero, even though my father’s ex-military.

samanthabarnum's avatar

@Facade You’ve lived in the same house your whole life? Wow. Do you feel restless or like you’re missing out at all?

Facade's avatar

@samanthabarnum Very much so. I hate this house, seriously lol

samanthabarnum's avatar

@Facade What keeps you tied there and not just moving away for a new life?

Facade's avatar

@samanthabarnum Being financially dependent on my parents

kenmc's avatar

I moved from Michigan to San Francisco for 6 months then moved back to MI. I’ve been here for a year and can’t wait to get the fuck out again.

Let me try to remember. Santa Monica, Culver City, Encino, Santa Barbara, Goleta, Montecito, Camarillo, San Francisco, Big Sur, Carmel, Monterey, Santa Barbara, Pasadena, Santa Barbara, Pasadena, Los Olivos, Manhattan, 79th Street Boat Basin, Orchard Street, West 72nd Street, West 103rd Street, East 72nd Street, Washington, DC, (4 different places) West Village, Christopher Street, West 23rd Street, Cobble Hill, SoHo, Greenville, NY, E. Durham, NY, A cabin in the woods, Prince Street, East 3rd Street, Hudson Street, 106th and Riverside, 103rd and West End Avenue, 3rd Avenue and 88th Street, Copake, NY, Claverack, NY, Hudson, NY, Philmont, NY. OK, 45, doesn’t count squats, house-sitting, regular traveling. I’m 60.

samanthabarnum's avatar

@pdworkin Wow! Do you feel like that’s too much, or are you comfortable with the amount you’ve moved?

mirza's avatar

I’m 19 and I’ve moved 3 times and moving again in September.

casheroo's avatar

7 times. Twice into the same place (I’m currently moved back in with my parents)

I do wish we could move far away sometimes, not too far but a state or so away. I want to finish school, and then my husband wants to finish school…and then we want to be in this area for the good school districts. So, other than travelling, I doubt we’ll move far. I do wonder if I could handle being far from my immediate family, we’re very close and it would just be weird not to be able to see them often.

evelyns_pet_zebra's avatar

@samanthabarnum yeah, why you got a problem with us old folks on Fluther? Don’t make me go all curmudgeon on you, you little whippersnapper.

From Largo, FL to East Orange, NJ. Then to Kinnelon. Then in the span of 1 year.. Parsippany, Kinnelon again, back to Parsippany then to Morris Plains then back to Kinnelon, then Hopatcong. Then Hopatcong to Washington Twp, back to Hopatcong. Then to Basking Ridge.. Then starting in August 2007 right after I turned 18..Sun City Center, Florida. Then Bakersfield, California. Then Hood River, Oregon… Georgetown in Grand Cayman, then to where I am now. Denver.

So what’s that.. 19 times in 20 years. Most of it in the last 2 years.

dpworkin's avatar

You know, it just seemed to happen. I’m still not settled. When I finish school my fiancee and I are going to have to find a place to live.

Vegas to SF in 2002. I’ll be moving to Palo Alto to go to college pretty soon, though. :)

I’m glad we only moved once. It was definitely an “upgrade” and I was young enough to not care that much. The only reason we moved was because my parents wanted somewhere new since they were both from Las Vegas anyway. I think it’s cool when people have never moved (meaning, never moved between cities); sometimes I wish that could’ve been me. I know some people who have been friends since they were toddlers and I can’t say that for myself.

samanthabarnum's avatar

@chelseababyy Do you feel uprooted and wish you had some stability, or do you enjoy it?

Tink's avatar

Once. From LA to Inland Empire, I might move again in a couple of months though

eponymoushipster's avatar

16, soon to be 17.

chelseababyy's avatar

@samanthabarnum Everything up to the move from Hopatcong to Basking Ridge was my parents doing, through divorces, me being taken out of my parents custody. Moving to Florida>Cali>Oregon>Cayman>Colorado… Was my doing, and I loved every moment. I wish I could keep traveling, but money is a little tight atm.

About nine times, all within the Greater Los Angeles area, and I’m 56 years old.
I’ve lived in the same house for over 25 years.

dpworkin's avatar

Wow, @wtf. I would love to know what that’s like.

AstroChuck's avatar

I’ve been everywhere. I’ve been to:
Reno, Chicago, Fargo, Minnesota,
Buffalo, Toronto, Winslow, Sarasota,
Wichita, Tulsa, Ottawa, Oklahoma,
Tampa, Panama, Mattawa, La Paloma,
Bangor, Baltimore, Salvador, Amarillo,
Tocapillo, Baranquilla, and Perdilla.

tinyfaery's avatar

Wait. This will take a sec.

Ok. 6 times with my family when I was young (in actuality, I ran away a lot so I actually stayed in more places).

Since the age of 17, 23 times,
including 7 times in one year.

That’s a total of 29 times. I like change.

chelseababyy's avatar

But if we’re talking how many places I’ve been? 20+ states, one other country, waaaaay to many cities/towns to count.

asmonet's avatar

Uh, 12. And I’m 22.
I love moving, not the loading and unloading as much as the new homes, new people, new neighbors to mock at dinner, new air, new friends, new life. New adventures.

If I had money, I would never buy a home, just rent houses around the world and wander. I have no need for strings to hold me down.

AstroChuck's avatar

Oh, and:
Boston, Charleston, Dayton, Louisiana,
Washington, Houston, Kingston, Texarkana,
Monterey, Faraday, Santa Fe, Tallapoosa,
Glen Rock, Black Rock, Little Rock, Oskaloosa,
Tennessee, Hennessey, Chicopee, Spirit Lake,
Grand Lake, Devils Lake, Crater Lake, for Pete’s sake.

Likeradar's avatar

I’ve lived in NY, Charleston, California, Northern CO, and Denver. I’ve packed up and moved 15 times, and I’m getting ready to do it again next month. I’m 29. Waaay too many times!

dannyc's avatar

Only when I had to, and each time I missed the last place, then learned to love the next. All new places have been an adventure for me and my family.

Supacase's avatar

21 times that I can think of off the top of my head, not including repeats (lived with grandparents several times during childhood, moved back home a few times after moving back from other states).

@aaronan2006 What is all that for?

FrogOnFire's avatar

I’m 18 and I’ve only moved twice.

First time from Maryland to Massachusetts when I was 5
Second time from Massachusetts to Illinois when I was 15

I couldn’t imagine how hard it would be to move 20 times in your life. I feel lucky.

@Tink1113 I think he’s a spammer, he’s answered twice in this thread and all his posts have different e-mail/phone/skype/MSN addresses.

samanthabarnum's avatar

@FrogOnFire Where in Illinois? Six of my moves have been in Illinois.

Jack79's avatar

16 major ones (usually between countries) and several smaller ones (eg moving in with a girl and then back out again when we broke up). I’ve always liked stability and would like to have a “base” from where to travel, so for me this is far too many times. I’m 37 so that’s almost once a year during my adult life.

I’m not counting the moving back-and-forth that went on during my childhood. I’m also not counting moving to a holiday home for a month or something.

Oh and I might be moving again next week by the looks of it.

Bluefreedom's avatar

I’m 42 years old and I’ve moved 16 times in my life, so far. I feel that I’ve been fortunate in my life for moving that much because I was able to see and experience different cultures in the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and several different states in America.

I’ve never felt unsettled from my moves but I still get restless now and then because I’d really like to go back and visit some of the other countries that I’d been to and had previously lived in.

galileogirl's avatar

@samanthabarnum I moved to my current apartment about the time you were born

Age
0–20———13 times
21–40———6 times
41–60———twice

I hope to buy a home this year and move one last time.

jonsblond's avatar

I lived in 6 cities by the age of 6. Peoria, IL. Whittier, CA. Flagstaff, AZ. Petaluma, CA. Novato, CA then Las Vegas, NV. I lived in two different houses while I lived in Vegas. The first was for one year, the last was for 9 years. When I was 16 our family moved back to Illinois. I finished high school then moved back to Las Vegas for 4 months, then back to IL for 4 months. I then moved to Palo Alto, CA for three months and then to San Luis Obispo to attend college for two years. During that time I moved to 5 different houses throughout SLO, with a 3 month stay in Morro Bay, CA.

After my two years of college I moved back to Illinois and lived in my parent’s home for a year before getting married and moving to another town a few miles away with my husband. We lived in that town for two years then bought a house in another little town just a few miles away. We have lived in this house for 15 years now. The longest I have lived in one spot.

Moving when I was still in high school was a difficult transition. It was hard to feel in place when everyone else had grown up together. I’m happy that I got to experience living in different parts of the country but it is nice to have a place to call home. I’m glad my children have been able to grow up in the same community all their life.

I hope to move one more time. Our plan (dream) is to move to northern Wisconsin when our children finish school.

I am 42 and I have moved 9 times, 7 of them within the same area – two times from state to state. My family moved from Illinois to Southern California when I was 3, I stayed in the area until I was 41, that’s when I moved out of state.

tedibear's avatar

Let’s see if I can remember… 12, not counting going back and forth from college for four years. And I lived in the same dorm for 3⅓ out of 4 years.

I wouldn’t mind moving back to my hometown – or somewhere near it. But I like where I am now as well. Oh, and I’m 45.

girlofscience's avatar

I moved for the first time when I was 18 and went to college. Then I moved into a new apartment every year of college. Then I moved to grad school.

So, 5, all of which happened in the last five years.

Five times.

My dad was in the Navy when I was younger so moving was expected more in the first 10 years of my life. When my dad left the Navy we settled for a while but then my parents divorced, dad moved out and I eventually moved in with him for a bit. The last time I moved (ie: to where I live currently) was the first time I have moved to a place of my own :)

hungryhungryhortence's avatar

Seventeen times in my first 11yrs, I stopped counting after that.

cak's avatar

By the time I was 14, we had moved 13 times. Between 18 and 25, I moved 5 more times. Between 30 and 38…twice.

Too many times!

Strauss's avatar

In my sixty years:
My family moved twice before I was three. I don’t remember the moves, but that should count.
Then when I was 14 I went away to school. Then my family moved away.
When I was 16, I left the boarding school, and went to live with my sister and brother-in-law.
Then I went into the Navy. Great Lakes, Mare Island, VietNam, Virginia Beach.
Left the Navy, back to Illinois. Moved about 6 times in the next 8 years.
Wyoming, Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, New Orleans—that was all in 1978–1979.
1981-Austin TX
1982 Dallas
1984 Shady Shores (TX)
1985 Comfort
1986 Johnson City
1986 Back to Austin
1987 Round Rock TX (all the above from 1981 are in Texas)
1988 Loxahatchee, FL
1990 Orlando
1994 Atlanta
1996 Aurora, CO
and her I remain…for now

chelseababyy's avatar

@Yetanotheruser Yay for more people in Colorado!

samanthabarnum's avatar

@Yetanotheruser And how do you feel about moving so much? Settled? Restless?

Strauss's avatar

@samanthabarnum I feel settled now. I was single (mostly), and a prime candidate for grand adventures. I met many good people, a few not-so-good people, and saw a lot of places I would probably only dream about had I not moved. I was a restless spirit, but now I am in the house I want to retire in. (Just because I retire, doesnot mean my travels are over.)

Joybird's avatar

I shifted from one hip to the other hip tonight across a period of 4 hours that I’ve been screwing around online. That’s alot. Sometimes I don’t shift at all. (giving you a big cheesy, stupid looking grin now)
