Is there a way to fix the mini USB port on my Blackberry 8820?

Asked by NoCatharsis (207points) August 4th, 2009

The mini USB port on my BB 8820 no longer connects to charge the battery. I’ve since gotten a new phone, but I’d like to repair the USB port so I can sell it. Any advice, or should I just write it off and move on?

Are you sure it’s the port? Is it not recognized as a device when you connect it to a PC? Because there is a chance it’s the battery, a much easier problem to solve.

No, I’m pretty sure it’s the port. The metal contacts into the port are literally dangling.

Ahh, expensive to fix if out of warranty, because (though I’m not sure in this case) it’s often an integral part of the motherboard.

Hi!

You can do it with a wooden toothpick.

Within the USB port you will see a little tongue. Gently lever up the tongue with the fine end of the toothpick.

To calibrate “up” now. The upper surface of the tongue carries the contacts pins and “up” will restore contact with the USB connector of your charger.

I keep all contacts from wearing out (or oxidising due to sparking) by applying silicon grease with the end of a toothpick.

The toothpick can be recycled!
