Help with Webroot Desktop Firewall?

Asked by desiree333 (3219points) August 4th, 2009

I downloaded a trial of the webroot firewall and I have a few questions:

1. There is a place where you can type in blocked/ IP adresses. I typed in a few websites that I have recieved pop-ups before. (ex. partypoker.com, specificclick.com etc.) I just typed in the URL. Will doing this completely block the websites from giving me pop-ups?

2. For Trusted Sites, will this automatically allow the websites I enter in here to give me any unstable material, like pop-ups, or without blocking any possible pop-ups?

I don’t have a lot of expierience with Firewalls, although I have always had one installed. Any general information would be appreciated.

Download a free program like AVG.

But it is bad to run both at the same time so I would uninstall what you are using and then run AVG.

@ that’s exactly what I did, AVG is running a scan right now. I can’t believe how misleading webroot is. What is the frigging point of installing their free trial when you can’t even quarantine the viruses?

@desiree333 :: I would really look into http://www.malwarebytes.org/ too. Between AVG and that you should be pretty safe.

And use Firefox as a browser too.

Then i went back to AVG and never had a problem , johnpowell got in first i 2nd the use of products from above mentioned site it really is good . Ever since i went back to AVG and installed RogueRemoverFREE, i have been happy and so has the computer .

@desiree333 The point was probably to get you to immediately purchase the program so you could begin to quarantine them.

I am running webroot now, and have had no problem quarantining cookies etc, but @johnpowell and sandystrachan have made very good points. When my webroot subscription runs out, if they don’t make a very good offer for the next year’s protection, I plan to go to AVG too. And thanks to John I will probably add malwarebytes, too.

To everyone:
I downloaded AVG and I’m not super excited about it because the sweep ran for 2½ hours and it didn’t even find the viruses, but found a lot of cookies. It was about 5:30 in the morning I believe and I just has to stop the scan so I could go to bed. After I stopped the scan it “deleted” the cookies I think, but it didn’t say anything about quarantining them. I’m kind of worried that the cookies may still be harming my computer.

It would be awesome if you guys could tell me the right buttons to push after a scan is stopped/completed. Just to make sure all the issues can no longer harm my laptop.

@Zendo Yes, what a scam. I really like Webroot. I have purchased it before but it ran out.

Just to put your mind at ease, and nothing particularly to do with the question (although my personal favourite firewall is sunbelt personal firewall nee kerio personal firewall, nee tiny personal firewall), cookies don’t actually harm your computer, they are files that websites put onto your machine to allow them to track who you are, and sometimes to track who you are across multiple sites. It is this possible invasion of privacy that causes them to get flagged up as malware.
