Strange/multiple IP addresses from my iphone. Normal or hacked?

Asked by GD_Kimble (2285points) August 5th, 2009

Let me preface by saying I have almost ZERO tech knowledge. So… gmail has that little feature where they tell you the last activity in your account, right? And my iPhone is sync’d with gmail via IMAP. So everytime I use my iPhone gmail, I’m getting the “last activity was at IP….” message, and each time—- it’s a different IP address. I used an IP lookup website, and those IPs are coming from the Chicagoland area. I live in NYC.
Should I be concerned about this or is my IMAP/iPhone mail coming through some sort of relay in Chicago?
I sincerely hope that all made some kind of sense.

Google has servers all over the place. I don’t think you ever know where communications with them are going to seem like they are coming from.

I think you should change your password anyways just to be safe.

Did you try a whois on any of those addresses?

@pdworkin, @GD_Kimble is referring to where their communications TO google have been coming from, I believe, not FROM google.

When he says “or is my IMAP/iPhone mail coming through some sort of relay in Chicago?” I assume that by “coming” he means “from”.

Also if you click “Details” at the bottom of your inbox I think that’s what it is. I’m on iPhone. You can sign out of all other sessions. So if someone is logged on to your account you’ll be able to sign him/her out.

@pdworkin, what @TheCreative said. He is talking about where his logins have been coming from. I think.
