Was being in the Matrix really that bad?

Asked by ragingloli (51961points) August 6th, 2009

Yes, the humies were swimming in slime with cables protruding out of them, yes they could not do anything in the “real” world.
But look at the alternative: The “real” world was a barren wasteland, devoid of and hostile to life. Being “free” would have meant not bein free at all, because the dead environment would have restricted you from doing anything.
However in the Matrix, while still being restricted by the constraints of the simulation, it still had less restrictions on what you could do and you could do anything you like, certainly much more than outside.

It is a question of if living the lie is more importent then living with the truth.

The goal is that even though things are bad, in the real world, you can make it better and keep it real.

Interesting.. I have wonderful dreams where I am so pissed off when I wake up. If I could have stayed in the dream I would have. I actually try to go back to sleep if I have a nice dream. Sometimes I can continue them.

If the dream is better than living in my sisters basement please keep me in it.

Also remember that the Simulation only provides the general environment, which is unquestioningly better than the one outside. It is the still the humans that shape the simulated world. They still have to eat, or they will die (if you die in the simulation you die for real), there is crime, poverty, all the other ailments that befalls our world. It is not a candy coloured paradise.

Who’s to say whether or not we’re in the Matrix right now?

I prefer to not be lied to, ever. Thus yes, being in the Matrix would be really that bad, as it is a lie! Having someone lie to you is having them say “I’m smarter or stronger than you so I’m judging that you cannot have and process this information.” How can you respect someone like that? Thus, how can you respect what they proclaim to be your best interests?

There stood no chance of humanity revolting and reclaiming the Earth while being lied to. However, there is a chance, albeit smaller, if they know what’s going on and choose to fight back.

What’s better, the truth or the lie? I say truth. I always say truth.

you can still live in the matrix if you know that you do.

Yeah, it was so much better to live in the matrix…strapped into those cocoons, hardwired with plug-ins all over their bodies…and feeding the very machines which had enslaved them.

Uh huh.

Red pill, or Blue?

AstroChuck's avatar

The little blue pill. Of course for erections lasting longer than four hours you should call a physician.

Horrible. Give me the truth, no matter how bad it is, any day.

The simulation wasn’t that great. Did you notice that most of the people in Zion were minorities? These people were the most oppressed in the Matrix simulation and had the hardest time accepting the injustices of the world they lived in. This is why they became aware that the crappy world they lived in could not be real. The Matrix was programmed in such a way as to give some people better opportunities than others. Elitism, social classes and racism were built into the Matrix. The oppressed minorities were the ones that woke up from a world that did not make sense.

Of course, this is an allegory for our world; we accept the structures we were born into, not realizing that we have been manipulated into accepting them. Of course, some people could see through the illusions, which is why we had people like Gahndi and Martin Luther King, Jr. In our real world, we are capable of changing things, of making things equal and just for all. The programming of the Matrix would not allow for that.

“Elitism, social classes and racism were built into the Matrix.”
No. That was the result of the humans living inside the simulation.

Actually, yes. The Wachowskis have talked about it in interviews. Their casting choices of minorities for the Zion scenes were deliberate to illustrate this point.

Not to mention that it jibes with the internal story: The Architect told Neo that the more recent versions of the Matrix were made to include suffering to create a more believable simulation for those plugged in. The suffering was programmed in to the Matrix.

Better to be free in whatever is your reality, than trapped in a false dream world of hope or material wealth..many people face that same dilemma right in our world…

The Matrix is religion. Atheists are outside the Matrix.

But how many of you, if told that this world was a only a simulation, would leave it for the ‘real world’ depicted in the Matrix?
