What's the range of cost likely to fix leaking coolant in a Saab?

Asked by wlc (39points) August 6th, 2009

The coolant in my car keeps going down even though I can’t see any leakage in the drive way. I’ve been filling the coolant and adding water regularly but I need to take it into the mechanic. However, I’m laid off and so I am trying to estimate the likely cost of repair. Does leaking coolant necessarily mean I’ll need a new radiator?

No sign at all?

If there’s no external sign of a coolant leak, that may mean the head gasket is blown and the coolant is going into the engine. If that’s the case , it’s about a $1500–2000 repair :(

Here’s a list of signs of a blown head gasket.

If you live anywhere at all near the Capital District in New York State, pm me for a great Saab/Volvo mechanic who won’t rip you off.

I had a coolant leak in my Passat and it ran me just over $1000. But like these guys said, it may not be the same deal, mine was visibly leaking. It may have been worth it to just go through a jug of coolant every week rather than getting it fixed, if I think about it, the car was pretty old.

Ah well.

I just found this site

Looks like it will give you estimates based on Vehicle, Location, and Repair
