How can I find out the max speed of my car?

Asked by tyrantxseries (4722points) August 6th, 2009

On the dash it maxes out at 280km/hr, everyone I talk to says their car/truck maxes(because of the Governor) out at 160–170, tonight on the way home on the highway we maxed out(because of traffic) at 195 km/hr, all the local race tracks we’ve called won’t let us drive the track, the highway speed limit is 100km/hr (if we get caught it’s jail time and a big ass fine) what can we do?

Drive to Montana and find that interstate without the daytime speed limit and put the hammer down. Also check out the local drag strips. The one here lets people run there own cars just to check speed and times for a fee.

Go to Germany and drive on the autobahn, though I do recall they put a speed limit on it too recently.

Call more race tracks or offer more money.

But in my opinion, you don’t need to know the max speed of your car above 200kilos per hour on a public highway. Really, why do you need to know so much to endanger people like that?

I live in canada, so Germany is out of the question, also U.S is a possable..
NO danger to anyone there was 0 cars around us when we were doing this, as soon as we saw 1 car we slowed down to the speed limit.

“as us is a possable”

wat

“there was 0 cars around us when we were doing this”

Except for the car you were in, right?

Why do you need to know this?

Anywho, there are some highways in Montana with few speed restrictions.

we just want to know,
why wouldn’t you want to know how fast your car is?
only 2 people in my car(myself, coffeenut), we both understand the dangers of traveling that fast, sometimes risks are acceptable

Take it to a performance shop and have them run a dyno test on it. It will tell you exact HP and max speed along with a few other things.

tyrantxseries's avatar

@missingbite hmmm good idea we would rather drive it to the max or do that until we find a race track that will let us do it.

What governor?

@Zendo,...Schwarzenegger or the Terminator, which will apply if these guys aren’t careful.
See ya…Gary aka wtf

i hear that the US has some nice flat salt deserts.

@missingbite
that only works if they consider air drag

Drive it off a 300ft cliff. All cars have a max speed of 32ft per sec.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies

Correction. All cars have a maximum acceleration of 32 ft per second per second. The maximum speed depends on the height of the cliff and air resistance.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

I stand corrected… and now I sit corrected.

missingbite's avatar

@ragingloli I’m aware of that. Most of the performance shops know exactly how to calculate all the info based on the type of car. As long as the car is not “tricked out” with body mods, the shop can get real close to it’s performance.

missingbite's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies @Ivan I would think terminal velocity would come into play depending on height. Thrust may be able to overcome terminal velocity depending on the type of car.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

@missingbite

Not on my car. But what you say is true.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies Don’t worry, mine either. I doubt a Toyota Tacoma as beat up as mine could even come close!
