Since when have there ever been tests for people to get married OR have kids?

I don’t know about kids, but when I got married in New Jersey we had to have a blood test. I don’t remember what it was looking for, though.

Personally, I think there should be a written test for people to have kids.

By the looks of things , you shouldn’t be allowed to have kids or marry someone . Unless you marry your cousin

In the olden days you had to have a syphilis test to get married. (In California anyway.)

Here is a quote:

Is a premarital physical exam required?

No premarital examination or blood test is required to obtain a marriage license in New York State.

Here is the source

Unfortunately, there are no tests for people to have children.

Here is a site that lists marriage requirements for each state:

There are never any required tests for people to have children, although if you see a doctor for prenatal counseling the mother will certainly have certain tests done, and depending on the couple’s ethnic background, tests for genetic traits may be advised for both parents.

So no tests to get married. What about to give birth? I hear both pArents have to get tested?

I don’t think there are ever any requirements to give birth (after all, you could in theory do the whole thing without ever seeing a doctor or any representative of the state), although there are highly recommended tests. Mostly these are tests for the mother to determine her health status and check for certain conditions such as anemia, thyroid disease, gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia and certain infections. These tests are done on blood, urine, and vaginal swabs, and blood pressure is also monitored. If both parents are from certain ethnic groups then tests for genetic disorders are usually recommended – for example, Tay-Sachs and other similar conditions for Ashkenazi Jews and sickle-cell trait for people of African descent. In general a person can refuse any medical care, so in that sense they’re not “required” (and certainly plenty of women get no prenatal care at all), but I suppose if parents were refusing to have these tests done for no good reason, a doctor might start to be concerned about negligence.

Im pretty sure My mother had a mandatory HIV test in the 80s when she gave birth… I guess that changed.

I don’t know the answer to this, but I do know that herpes and hepatitis don’t have random capitalized letters.

You get blood tested by the midwife , anyone who is pregnant gets this different tests are optional . They are done to test the baby , blood group and many things including HIV and such like .

I don’t think the STD check is mandatory, but they do check for them when you go in for a prenatal visit. I think it’s just to be sure..even monogamous women should have the test, because it’s for the health of the baby.

sandystrachan's avatar

For the three pregnancies with my partner , my partner always gets every blood test available just to be safe .
No the STD test is optional but worth getting as you never know .

So what happens if you fail the test? do they take the baby away?

missjena's avatar

Um no they treat the baby medically to prolong their life.
