Best way to leave an automatic watch for several days?

Might sometimes go several days without wearing my automatic watch. Don’t want to wind it manually every (other) day. Nor do I care if I have to wind it and reset the date when I do get around to wearing it. Is it okay to let it wind down? Or must I invest in an automatic watch winding box? Or should I simply pull out the crown, leaving it wound up?
