How did the Moon get there?

Asked by CEVogler (13points) August 8th, 2009

What is the best current scientific thinking on the origin of the Moon? Was it the result of material ejected from the Earth in an ancient collision with a large asteroid or planet? Could a large object colliding with the Earth actually punch completely through it and throw out a mass of super-hot material, similar to an exit wound on a human body, that would eventually become rounded off into the body we know as the Moon?

That is the best theory people have come up with. And the Earths core is Iron rich and the moon is lacking iron. So the theory is something hit the earth and blew off part of the outside that lacks iron.

Zeus was trimming his toenails one day and a piece of nail flew up and got stuck in the sky.
