Does anyone know anything about the prizes on The Price is Right?

Asked by jbfletcherfan (13212points) August 14th, 2009

If I was on there, there’s so much stuff that I wouldn’t want or have room for. Some of the vehicles I wouldn’t drive across the street. What happens when a contestant doesn’t want a prize? Do they get to take the cash value of it? Do they get to choose a comparable prize in the same catagory? Does anyone know?

I remember one time hearing, what you get is what you walk with .
Well wasn’t those exact words but you get the drift

You have to take the prize you win , no swapsies .

My moms old friend in the 80’s won a car on the show. She immediately sold the car for meth at a huge loss. I’m sure that she would have taken the cash if she could have. That would have bought more meth.

I hate my life..

The prizes are often given by companies in return for appearing on the show and being pimped off by Bob/Drew. It’s not like TPIR goes out with cash and buys these prizes, so there’s not a cash equivalent to give. What you win is what you get. And then you have to pay taxes on all of your winnings. So usually people just sell the car/item X to cover the gift tax and keep a bit of profit.

This is all very interesting. I thought MAYBE you didn’t have to take what you won.

They give away terrible cars.

@The_Compassionate_Heretic You got THAT right. If I won some of that crap, I’d sell it so fast it’d make your head spin.

@jbfletcherfan Giving someone a Pontiac is like giving someone a high monthly maintenance bill.

@The_Compassionate_Heretic That’s cause good cars don’t need to advertise by means of giving cars away on a silly daytime TV show :)

Giving those cars away is like those random people on the street handing out flyers….it’s like saying : “Here. You throw this out.”
