Which would be of more interest to you: to have a complete understanding of Mars or the ocean floor?

Asked by Ansible1 (4841points) August 14th, 2009

If somehow you were able to gain all this knowledge on only one of these subjects which would you choose?
Choosing Mars would answer things like: Is/was there ever life there, terraforming methods, ways to achieve sustainable colonization, etc.
Choosing the ocean floor would lead to: possible cures for diseases, discovery of new organisms, answers to the theory of Atlantis, etc.
Which would you choose?

The ocean floor. I was actually an Oceanography major. Also, the mysteries of the seas hold much promise for our planet.

There could well be medicines, food, potential housing.

Its health affects our weather, our landmasses, our water.

Mars. I’m a bit of a planetary science nut. Also I might learn more about myself seeing that men are from Mar and women are from Venus.

There’s little reason we can’t do both.

@The_Compassionate_Heretic- That little reason being $$$.

Ocean floor.

The ocean floor. I would love for us to have a better understanding of what we have here on our own planet

@AstroChuck The US spends plenty of money. The availability of money isn’t so much the issue as much as how they spend that money.

More to the question, I say let’s learn everything we can about the planet we’re on because that will help usore initially, and will help down the road when it comes to exploring other planets.

I would go with Mars. Obviously people can’t get along here and it’s time to ship some people off planet.

It’s a difficult choice but I would have to go with Mars as I believe this would give us a better chance of understanding the life cycles of planets and how to manipulate their environments. This knowledge would enable the human race to spread from Earth and set up outposts, and if the unthinkable happened and our home world came to disaster it wouldn’t necessarily mean the end of the human race.

Having said that maybe it would be better to have a complete understanding of Venus and how the runaway greenhouse effect happened there.

Since Marina always takes the good answers, I will say I want to know more about Mars.

Bottom of the ocean thinking is woefully short sighted

The main reason to get those medicines and food is to help our species live long enough to get off this planet and start expanding. she is right we have big problems now and need all the help we can get, but for what? I say, to help us really start exploring this cosmic home of ours.

Tell me more about Mars.

With only one choice then I’d choose the ocean floor since so much of this current planet still fascinates me and I believe it warrants more care and attention rather than a bandaid and shove to the backburner.

Ocean floor. We really need to get it together here and there is SOOOO much unexplored.

Mars. It gives us the next step to go further.

What about this?

Is it not possible that the effort of exploring the deep ocean will, in itself, help us to solve and provide for what would be necessary for a mars trip?

I recently learned about the hadopelagic region of the ocean floor, and it is fascinating. A friend of mine is writing a symphonic piece about the different zones of the ocean, and what he has so far is quite interesting.

The ocean floor. We know more about the moon, and pretty soon, Mars, than we would ever know about Earth’s ocean floors. Now, if the question had been between the ocean floors and a black hole, I would go for the black hole.
