I'm having a really bad stomach ache. What do you think could be the cause?

Asked by mangeons (12288points) August 14th, 2009

Well, for the past two nights (nights only, for some reason) I’ve been having a pretty bad stomach ache. I thought last night was a one time thing (stomach pains so bad I was crying, couldn’t move very well) but now it’s back tonight. Any ideas as to what it could be? I find it very curious that it only happens at night though.

Maybe you had some food poisoning
Can you remember what you ate for the last two days?

mangeons's avatar

@teh_kvlt_liberal Nothing that I don’t usually eat. Cheerios, String Cheese, just normal stuff. And if it was food poisoning, wouldn’t I be feeling it during the day as well?

Possibly an appendicitis attack? As usual with medical issues, seeing a doctor is the best bet. Often you can ignore pain during the day, but notice it most strongly at night.

It could be gas, appendicitis, food poisoning, a burst ovarian cyst if you have ovaries, Krohn’s Disease, any number of things really. Go see your doctor.

severe indigestion?

mangeons's avatar

The pain has been literally non-existent during the day, and severe at night. My mom says it’s nothing to worry about, but I’m not sure if that’s true?

Something to do with lying down then??

mangeons's avatar

No, I’m sitting up at the computer and my stomach is in pain at the moment, so I don’t think it has to do with lying down. It often dulls or goes away if I don’t move for awhile, but then if I move, the pain comes back.

janbb's avatar

Why is your Mom not worried about it, mangeons? Do you get stomach pains from stress?

mangeons's avatar

@janbb No, I get nauseous from stress, but not stomach pains. And it’s dulling now, for no apparent reason. It’s off and on.

Have you tried tums?

mangeons's avatar

@teh_kvlt_liberal We don’t have any, and those tend to actually make my stomach worse, because of the awful taste.

janbb's avatar

Got to go to bed, but hope you feel better.

Nyquil helps you to put you back to sleep

mangeons's avatar

It doesn’t wake me up, but it stops me from sleeping as easily.

Well, my stomach ache seems to have actually gone away for the moment, at least. I’ll update if anything else happens. Thanks for the help, suggestions, and support, guys!

Heat and/or ice packs can help. Try a glass of plum or apple juice with one meal. If you have the impression that it’s gas (which can be quite painful, and time-sensitive as you describe), try rolling into different positions while lying down (one side for five minutes, then the other, onto your front and your back in the same sort of way). But these are all just uninformed suggestions that sometimes work for me – it could be nothing like your mom says, or it could be serious. Doctor visit is always a good idea.

It could be symptoms of Kidney disease, Liver failure, indigestion, or even gall stones. Please visit your medical care provider as soon as possible. I would even suggest a visit to the emergency room, considering the symptoms you have described.

If the pain continues or worsens, get a parent to take you to a doctor. It may be nothing, but it could be appendicitis. Usually confirmed through blood tests.

Feel better, sweetie.

Hope it is gone for good and you get to sleep.

mangeons's avatar

I’m actually feeling a lot better at the moment, I have a feeling it was just gas. I’ll let you guys know tomorrow if it came back, or whatever happens. Thanks for the suggestions and support, again guys!

I had the same thing about 3 years ago. One day it was so bad i went to the hospital, they diagnosed it as acute gastritis. They gave me some medicine for acid reflux and i took it for a few weeks and I was fine.
It might be worth a trip to the doctor. Good luck!

Sounds psychological to me. Is there someone with whom you sleep who makes you angry? Anything else about the night, your bed, your living circumstances that make you feel unhappy? Check the psyc out along with the phys.
