How does one go about obtaining an interstate job?

Asked by Sariperana (1447points) August 16th, 2009 from iPhone

I want to move interstate. The place I want to move to is 8 hours away drive. My experience is government and IT work. Has anyone ever done this successfully or unsuccesfully and what are the first steps you took?

You’re likely going to have to go there a couple times before moving.

Check online job sites to see what kinds of jobs are in the area.

This used to be much easier in better economic times. Companies nowadays are often unwilling to pay for non-local interviews or relocation costs.

Your best bet is to job search first. In your cover letter, state that you are moving to that area in x month. Also that you can come for interviews. That tells the potential employer that you are willing to pay your own relocation costs. It still may not work.

In that case, consider spending a week or more in the new place, setting up meetings with people in your fields.

Good luck.

Which state? Are you choosy about the specific area? City, suburbia, country? Are you fixed on one particular state? Are there other reasons you have chosen that state?

@gailcalled Yes, i have chosen Melbourne. Its a large city, with plenty of stuff going on that i have just fallen in love with…. Inside melbourne, i would like to work somewhere central and live not to far away from that.

I think i am just at a stage where i have made it such a big thing and left it to long that i have had too much time to doubt and question myself.

@Sariperana: Ah, you’re an Ozzie. Sorry, I can be of no help, living in the US as I do.

I have no idea what the job market is like in Melbourne. If you’re young, however, go for it. Try networking with friends and family.

@gailcalled my concerns can be considered universal, so thanks for the advice :)
