How do you stop a 2 year old boy from putting his hand down his pants and peeing all over himself?

Asked by woodfieldmomma (41points) August 17th, 2009

My two year old has his hand down his pants all the time(day and night). He is constantly wetting his bed and clothes because of this. I just don’t know what to do, my oldest never did this.

He/she might have irritation/a rash down there which makes him/her do it (hand down the pants).
If this is going on for quite some time i would suggest to visit your doctor.
About the wetting i have no idea.

I’m willing to bet it’s an experiment and he will be bored with it soon. In the meantime, back to diapers?

I like rebbel’s answer: it could be a rash, itch or some other problem that he is dealing with as best he can. You should check with your doctor.

If he is doing it for the pleasure, and you want to break a habit early, you have two choices: prevention or consequences. Prevention means finding a way to make it difficult to do the action. Tighten the belt on his pants to make it hard to get his hand in there, for example.

Consequences means an immediate negative consequence; make him wash his soiled clothing every time it happens (I know he is two, and he won’t do a good job, its not the clean pants you want, it is the unpleasant consequence of having to do the chore). Or, slap the palms of his hands and tell him “no”.

One of my favorite negative consequences for my boys was to make them hold onto the belt loop of my trousers and stay with me, next to me, for 15 minutes. They hated the lack of freedom to do what they wanted, and I got to observe their behavior for the 15 minutes after the problem.

I love these questions that bring back memories. :)

My son did the same thing at the same age. He’d shove at least one hand down the front of his diaper and end up with soggy pjs and soiled sheets every night. He sometimes did this during the day, but only if he was tired and zoning out on the couch with a book or a movie. Anyway, the only way I got him to stop was by dressing him in one-piece pajamas at night. If I hadn’t kept up with laundry and had him in pjs with a separate top and bottom, he’d stick his hands right down there when he went to bed. I have some great blackmail photos for when he’s older. This went on for a few months, and then stopped. He had no rash, infection, or other complaint. I think it was sort of like how some kids twirl their hair or suck their thumbs when they’re sleepy.

If it’s too hot where you live for long pjs, maybe you can find a onesie in his size. Snap it at the crotch, put a soft pair of shorts over it, and see if it gets him to put his hands elsewhere. I don’t think it’s anything to worry about, but I know what a pain it is to change wet sheets in the middle of the night and deal with extra laundry. During the day, remind him to keep his hands out of his pants and have him go wash them whenever you see him do it. Don’t make a big deal out of it or humiliate him, just practice good hygiene.

Oh, and a side note on the onesies: If you are starting to potty-train and worry that a onesie will get in the way, just unsnap it at the bottom, pull the snaps up over his tummy, and resnap them over one shoulder like a toga. It keeps the onesie out of the way while he practices using the toilet. He’ll just need your help to resnap before he pulls his pants up.

lol…just made me giggle sorry.. my boy is nearly three and has not got a clue about potty training yet…although he want his trousers off every minute of the day!
.the fascination of their willies…so quaint…

First you need to establish who you would rather he start peeing all over.

Then, by transference and training you can get him to stop peeing all over himself.

I agree with the above.

Funny. My 4 year old daughter who, at the age of 3 announced that “in front, girls have butts and boys have tails” just today said “it would be funny if boys pooped out their wieners too.”

I would put coveralls or onesies on him. Some boys do, and some don’t.

When my youngest son was around 3, he used to copy the dog, peeing and pooping in the yard, until one day I said “Dogs go in the yard, people use the bathroom”. From then on, he used the bathroom. I think that was probably when he realized the dog wasn’t a person, and he wasn’t a dog.

That’s the age when they find the best toy in the world. Little boys need more training than puppies. One summer day my dad was standing in a checkout line with my 3 yo brother. The lady in front of him started glaring at Dad and getting angry. Finally he looked down and saw my brother running his hand up and down her bare leg smiling and saying ‘Nice’

If he’s itching rather than fiddling it could be a urine infection? If it’s fiddling I’m sure he will grow out of this phase soon.
