Free, good quality DVD ripping software?

Asked by poofandmook (17320points) August 18th, 2009

I have a ton of DVDs my aunt made of family movies, and I don’t know what she did but they’re locked for copying. My ex found an excellent free DVD ripping program on the internet several years ago that we used to rip some movies that were unplayable in our player due to damage, but that ripped and copied just fine and looked as good as the original, but I have no idea what it was.

I’ve googled, and I’ve tried trial-and-error downloading, but it’s wreaking havoc on my anti-virus software, and I’d prefer not to waste my time if I don’t have to. So if anybody here knows where I can find free, downloadable software to rip DVDs, it’d be very appreciated.

are you on a mac or pc?

For mac there is Mac The Ripper

Ever since my kids have been able to “put the disks in all by themselves” I have given them their own copy to do that with.

I use handbrake to put DVD’s on my iPod. Does that help?

http://handbrake.fr/ Handbrake is all you need for any platform.

@StellarAirman – Cool. I didn’t know that was free.

that’s another reason why I wanted it… I want to put movies on my Zune and I have to rip them to do that. Thanks guys.

I’m running Vista, btw.

When i tried handbrake it wouldn’t rip copyprotected DVD’s.

Handbrake will rip any copy protected DVD. Just install VLC along with it. www.videolan.org

I use oneclick dvd ripper, it can rip copy protected DVD’s. There’s a hacker website that claims if you put a certian code into Nero you can rip copy protected DVD’s, but I have not figured it out yet.

Handbrake + VLC. On Windows OSes you will still need to rip to the hard drive first. I recommend DVD HD Decrypter for this step, it’s kept up to date.

there is a paid version that does it all, but the free version will rip the disc to the computer

Here’s a detailed guide to get you started: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/rip_your_movie_dvds_and_watch_them_anywhere

I’d mainly like a backup copy of a DVD that doesn’t look like I held a camcorder in front of a TV screen. lol

I still use, after all these years, RipIt4Me, which actually just streamlines DVDDecrypter and DVDShrink to work together. You might have a little trouble finding these programs, but they are out there.
