Why do dogs love to be under the covers with you while you sleep?

Asked by AlyxCaitlin (936points) August 19th, 2009

My dog Sweetie has only been doing this for a few months; she’ll tap her nose on your hand that’s holding the blanket which means you lift the blanket and she’ll snuggle with you by curling up next to your leg :] hahaha why is this?

Not sure. My dog does the same thing and he’s 2 years old now.

I would say this was fairly obvious! Probably for the same reasons we like to be under the duvet when we sleep, warmth, security, closeness. My dog does the same (until she gets too hot!) and I’ve never even questioned why.

It is their denning instinct. They have the ability to slow their heart rate and respiration so that they can stay in a more anoxic place for longer than we could..

My dog does it too, but I limit his time under there. Then I make come out and breathe for a while. I suggest you do that too.

I think it’s because they like the closeness. I don’t let my dogs go under the covers with me (they’re big boys, they would probably knock me out of the bed), but I’m sure if I let them they would love it. Most dogs are very affectionate and like to show you that they love you. My 90 pound pitty tries to lay on top of me all the time as if he was a little lap dog, but I know its just a way to show his affection.

My dog definitely does not like being under covers.

Neither does mine. But, he will sleep under the bed. Or next to the toilet.

Mine does it too, but only for five minutes about.
And my dog is a cat.

My Jack Russell Terrier does it, and she will stay under there until she is panting, then we make her come out, knowing she is hot and uncomfortable. She not only cuddles up next to you, but licks your knee or calf like you are her puppy. Puts me right to sleep every time. =)

My dog hates to be under the covers, but he always sleeps on our bed, near our feet.

My dog loves to burrow under the covers in the winter. She either sleeps near my feet, or up against my belly, which is comfy for both of us because she keeps me warm, and I return the favor!.

I have to be careful when i roll over tho, because when she sleeps, it’s very sound, and I could lay flat on her, and she wouldn’t budge an inch!

In the summer, she sleeps on the floor at the foot of the bed, so she can catch the breeze from the AC.
